WC1: Secret Missions 2 - mystery deaths of pilots

In Secret Missions 2, in Wing Commander, pilots die in the background. Bossman seems to be meant to die (part of the plot), but several times I have left on a mission, returned with my wingman and found that an additional pilot is now KIA. No mention of their death ever occurs. Is this a bug, or is this meant to happen? No pilot has ever died in one of my missions, yet Iceman and Angel are KIA. Replies via e-mail appreciated.
