I'm about to do the same thing.

But I've narrowed down my selection to two cards:
SoundBlaster 16 ASP
Gravis UltraSound Board

I guess what I really want to know is which one will/is the standard for
true 16-bit sound.

Only draw back with the SB-16ASP is the proprietary SCSI/CD-ROM
connection which only accepts Panasonic and some other CD-ROM.
Not that I plan on getting a CD-ROM anytime soon I think I'd go with an
NEC (they are the fastest)

I wrote off the Pro Audio Spectrum 16 because of its age...Maybe I'm
wrong...Please correct me.

Well, if you want a NEC, you can't get the SB16. Besides, it's sound isn't
that great anyway. <duck> <run>

Okay, you're wrong. ;) The PAS16 is really good, and the age (?) is good to,
because it is becoming another standard for sound support.

Also, read the PC magazine article from, I believe, March 93. They review a
bunch of sound cards, and PAS16 won editor choice.

Just something to think about.

This 'soundcard review' was thought of as a joke industry-wide, simply because
the test was unfair. By this I mean the cards were not tested the same way, and
there were a lot of opinions not facts in that review. This review created a lot
of heated discussion on comp.sys.ibm.pc.soundcard sometime ago.

Just thought that we should believe everything you read.
