I'm about to do the same thing.

But I've narrowed down my selection to two cards:
SoundBlaster 16 ASP
Gravis UltraSound Board

I guess what I really want to know is which one will/is the standard for
true 16-bit sound.

Only draw back with the SB-16ASP is the proprietary SCSI/CD-ROM
connection which only accepts Panasonic and some other CD-ROM.
Not that I plan on getting a CD-ROM anytime soon I think I'd go with an
NEC (they are the fastest)

I wrote off the Pro Audio Spectrum 16 because of its age...Maybe I'm
wrong...Please correct me.

SB is the defacto industry standard, and thou really shouldst be looking
more for a General MIDI module, but note that the SB16 ASP + Wave Blaster
combination wouldst be rather expensive, so it depends on thy budget

nay, this is not a problem, I have the SB16 and the NEC CDR-84 working
together superbly, thou just have to get a separate SCSI controller card for
the CD drive which NEC wouldst happily oblige.

oh, NEC is no longer the fastest, the Toshiba T3401 (or is it 3104?) is
now the world's fastest at 200 ms access speed, get this if thou want a
CD-drive.
