HELP!!

I just bought a Sierra Family Fun Pack and can't get past the first
screen of Gobliins.  The book says to pick up an axe in the first 
screen, but there isn't one there!  I can't seem to leave this screen 
and my wife is less than happy with this latest purchase.  Please help!
