Hello! I'm considering to buy a SB16ASP or Pro Audio Spectrum 16. Could you please tell me which one is better? I know that SB16ASP is compatible with MPU-401. Is Pro Audio 16 also compatible with MPU-401? I heard that SB are quite noisy while Pro Audio is better, is it true? Regards, Alexander h910...@hkuxa.hku.hk

I have no idea concerning MPU-401 compatibility, and from what I've heard on computers running both cards neither one sounds any more "noisy" than the other. However, if I were you, I would get the PAS-16. Two reasons: 1) It can do 44kHz STEREO, the SB-pro can do 22 stereo or 44 mono. 2) It has a 16-bit SCSI host adapter on it, which right there is an added $150 or so value... you can hook up a cd-rom, scsi HD, etc... All the above is IMO. My roommate has a PAS16 and I have a SB16ASP. Neither of us has great speakers but the cards sound about the same. Both of us spent some time moving cards around inside the case to limit noise, but I think I had to do a little more playing around (the PAS has better shielding). >However, if I were you, I would get the PAS-16. Two reasons: >1) It can do 44kHz STEREO, the SB-pro can do 22 stereo or 44 mono. First, the newer SBPro (version 2) can do 44 stereo. Second, the original question was comparing the SB16ASP and the PAS16. These are both 16 bit cards capable of 44Hz stereo recording. >2) It has a 16-bit SCSI host adapter on it, which right there is an added >$150 or so value... you can hook up a cd-rom, scsi HD, etc... This is the best feature (although you still have to pay Trantor for the drivers that you need to use a CD-ROM drive and others on the net have questioned whether the interface is really fast enough for a hard drive). I would have followed suit, except that I already had a Panasonic CD-ROM that was hooked to my SBPro and didn't want to buy a new one. You also forgot to mention that the PAS16 is cheaper than the SB16ASP. >All the above is IMO. > >Jim > >-- >Sophomore Year CS Major, Ga Tech. _/_/_/_/_/ _/_/_/_/_/ _/ _/ >SysOp, FutureLink BBS, 1-404-474-9344 _/ _/_/ _/ _/_/_/_/ >52MB, CG-ASCii-ANSI-VT52-VT100-VT102 _/ _/_/ _/_/_/_/_/ _/ >1200/2400bps-24hrs-KEEP C64 ALIVE! _/_/_/_/_/ _/_/_/_/_/ _/ -- John Zuena jzu...@sud.ed.ray.com Equipment Division Raytheon Company (508) 440-2028

Not the SBPRO... The SB16 CAN do 44kHz stereo. I think, though, that it still has the weird proprietary cd-rom port that only works with certain cd-roms only (not a true scsi port). Also, the SB16 is a bit more expensive than the PA16. Read Gamebytes (#9?) for a full review of these cards. Steven

Well this may be slightly off the subject, I have a SBpro with the cd-drive
creative puts out(it was a gift.nice gift at the time :( ) anyhow, I got a tape drive controller that will use only dma 1 or 2 . 2 is out of the question.
floppy controller won't have any of it. NOW for the question. I think the PAS16
is sotware setable. IS THE SB16? or will my cd work with the PAS16? How
about os/2 drivers for either one?
I know the sbpro can switch settings, but a lot of games will only use dma 1
and that sharebale thing is a load of shit. I told the tape-drive company
what I thought about their dma choices. Any info would be helpful as I have half of my boards pulled out and my computer hasn't been closed in 3 weeks. :[

Yes, the SB16 is software setable, with a config prog that you run during startup. I don't think that you can use your cd with PAS16 as it does not support SCSI.
