I know this is a very old and tired subject, but well, here it is again. I am in the market for buying a new computer. I am looking at a price celing of about $3500. Here is what I want minimum: 486dx33 8M ram 200M IDE HD HD 5.25/3.5 flopies sound board a FAST SVGA card. a company that knows the computer, and isn't going to give me the F**KING run around every time their G**-D***ed competer has a problem. I am tired of runing into IMBECELS that think that a clone can have only two COM ports installed into the computer. I have heard some good things about Gateway, and their 486dx2/66 However, I am warry. I have heard good things about Comp-USA, and the above statement about the company behind the computer applies to them. As far as sound goes, I know I am opening a can of worms here, but I want a sound board that is supported NOW, not will be supported 10 years from now, not is supported if I am willing to have this 40k driver installed into memory. I guess this means a SB-PRO. I am willing to pay a lot for speed. The first thing I want to do is try and optimize the graphics. I understand Gateway's machine has an ATI on a local bus. This is the type of preformance I am looking for. The second thing I would do is dump memory into the system. I have heard of some amazing feats of what can be done with a V-disk and 32 M of ram. I probably won't be able to afford that much, but memory is always good to have around (I will also be getting Mathematica, which is a memory hog) I am willing to pay a lot for quality. My current computer is a Compaq. (it was a graduation present... I didn't foot the bill) As much as I hate the propriortized system, and I will never, ever get another one, I have to admit that I have had very little -> no problems with it. It has been working for 4 years, and I think it will be working 4 years from now. My problem with it is that it is a 386sx16. great for word processing, lowzy for just about anything else coming down the line these days. I would apreciate realistic responces. I am not going to wait for the pentium, simply because it isn't here yet, and I have learned that in the computer industry, if you want to wait for next step of technology, you will never buy a computer. I would also like that if you are going to make a recomendation (or a complaint) that you site the specific company that you are refering to. If you give me a positive review, I may want to know how to talk to them. Thank you very much, W

I ordered the 486dx2/66 from Gateway, told them to stuff the monitor, and
bought a 17" one somewhere else for ~ $700. After tax and everything, I
spent about $3400. That would leave you $100 for a game card.
I bought it for games only. So far it works great!
