I'm having a problem w/ Wing Commander I hanging during game play under OS/2 (March beta). The action simply freezes and the machine is dead; a reset is needed at this point. I have the 'usual' settings for games in effect. The machine is a 66DX-2 w/local bus Orchid Farenheit, 8meg. Everything seems fine until it hangs. Any ideas? Anyone else having a similar problem with WC? --Golden -- Golden Richard III OSU Dept. of Computer and Information Sciences gric...@cis.ohio-state.edu (614) 292-0056

Can't offer you any advice, though. There are actually *many* different release levels of "Wing Commander I", put out as various bugs were found/fixed etc.. Some releases work better than others, but one thing I noticed that they (the three I tried) had in common was that they all worked more reliably when installed with fully expanded image/sound files.. ie. opt out of the "on the fly" decompression.

Anyone else having a similar problem with WC? Well I've tried a few things. Turn off retrace emulation. Play with the memory settings (increase to full). One of the things that I've tried with WCII that seems to work is starting an OS/2 fullscreen session, go to the WC directory, and then run the program. Although I sometimes have problems with timing on my Sound Blaster other than that it works OK. I've never seen the 2.1 beta so I don't know if the DOS session settings have changed any. Since Wing Commander does a lot of hardware (screen mostly) direct addressing, it is quite suprising that it runs under OS/2 at all. --Uncle Wolf
