Over the last two weeks we've asked you to decide about any new
charts we should be introducing this year. The votes are in, and
the results are interesting:
1. hot babes/guys (33 votes)
2. websites (32 votes)
3. television (30 votes)
4. books (23 votes)
5. software (14 votes)
6. sports (11 votes)
7. dance music (10 votes)
8. magazines (6 votes)
I'm sorry that I haven't been able to answer all you people
personally. Your comments have been very interesting to read, and
they will all be taken into account.
It is clear that the top 4 (websites, hot babes and guys, tv and
books) are the ones we should start working on right now.
Although obviously we cannot promise you we're going to implement
them all at once. For each of these new lists there are several
things to consider. I will list some questions here, and I love
to get some opinions from you about it.
1. hot babes/guys
This is a difficult one. A lot of people would like to see an
up-to-date list of the most popular males and females in the
world. But we've also received some comments that such lists
could be offensive. It surprised us that most respondents want to
see both the most popular women and the most popular men, and only
few mentioned just one of these two lists. Maybe 'hot babes/guys'
is not a good name to use. We could go for 'Celebrities' or
'Best Looking'. It depends on what the lists should stand for. Do
we want famous people on the list who are very popular but not
particularly physically attractive, or should the list be
restricted to idols that people around the world are dreaming
about? And how do we make sure that these lists don't degrade the
perception of World Charts as a whole?
2. websites
There are already many lists of cool webpages, website hot 100
lists etc. It will be difficult to compete with them. But we know
of no Website Top 100 published weekly, built from votes of
readers and not using ordinary traffic data. So it still will be
worth doing. One other problem is the size of the web. There are
zillions of websites, ranging from obscure personal homepages to
huge multi-branded conglomorates of websites. Should we include
sites like Yahoo and CNN, or should we restrict ourselves to pure
entertaining simple webpages. Should we make more than one list,
like one for personal homepages and one for the big brands? How
do we find new candidates for a Runners Up list? How do we define
a website as one entity, when a site can consist of several
sub-sites?
3. television
This one is just a little bit easier. Still a few questions need
to be answered. Do we restrict the list to television series,
spanning multiple episodes, or could a one-time tv program also
be included on the list? Are there enough tv series to make a
Top 100 list of, or do we have to make it a Top 40? And would
there be enough changes in a weekly TV programs list, or should
we be compiling this list only once a month?
4. books
Roughly the same questions arise here as they do for the websites
list. What kind of books should we be including on the list? Many
books are only released in one country. Can a small Garfield
pocket compete with Tolkien's big books, or do they have to be on
different lists?
That's about enough questions to wonder about. I would definately
like to hear from you about it.
Jurgen.
