Yes, these threads certainly are great nostalgic fun.
Instead of doing a top 20 list like yours, I'll list my favorites for the
genre I've always enjoy most... *shoot-em-ups*
(and I don't have much time now, so I'll just list what comes to mind
immediately - and these are in not in order)
BEST SHOOT-EM-UPS OF ALL TIME:
Thunderforce 4: Lightning Force (Megadrive/Genesis)
- The best horizontal shooter period.
R-Type 3: The Third Lightning (SNES)
- Must be something about "lightning" in the title that makes shoot-em-ups
good. :) This was even better than the first two arcades.
Thunderforce 3 (Megadrive/Genesis)
- Almost as good as Thunderforce 4.
R-Type (Arcade)
- One of the most influential games of the genre.
Galaga (Arcade, PlayStation)
- The ultimate classic shooter.
Gaplus (Arcade, PlayStation)
- The underrated sequel to Galaga, and one of the most rock hard shooters
ever made.
Atari Star Wars (Arcade)
- One of the best arcade games ever.
Defender (Arcade, various conversions)
- A classic that plays soooo well, and packs a challenge.
Axelay (SNES)
- A totally awesome sensory playing experience.
Raiden Project (PlayStation)
- Take two Raidens, jazz up the music, and call me in the morning.
Layer Section/Galactic Attack (Saturn)
- Overshadowed now by the poorer playing but nicer looking sequel
Raystorm, this is a great blast.
Tempest 2000 (Jaguar, PC, PlayStation, Saturn)
- One of the best classics brought rockin' to the 90s.
Discs of Tron (Arcade)
- A totally brilliant game that seems doomed to disappear into time
without any decent conversions. :(
Xevious (Arcade, PlayStation)
- Layed the ground for many vertically scrolling shoot-em-ups to come.
Gyruss (Arcade)
- Smoothly blending Tempest and Galaga with a great "tour the solar
system" concept.
Gynoug (Megadrive/Genesis)
- A totally forgotten, but excellently designed game.
Gaires (Megadrive/Genesis)
- A logical progression of the R-Type games, with lots of imaginative
levels and effects.
Anyway, that should do fine as a starter list. Feel free to add anything
I missed (I'm sure I missed a few at least).
