I don't want to stray too far off the point, but what exactly are you doing to your machine that requires that? It used to be at least once a year with Windows 98, but since 2000 came out, the number of times I've needed to reformat and reinstall the OS can be counted on one hand. Thats maintaining about 5 machines, too. My old gaming rig, a 3ghz Athlon XP became my wifes PC when I upgraded. That computer has a 4 year old install of XP thats still going fine.
