Four years ago, I would have agreed with you. Javascript has been abused
for all sorts of horrible crap. But a good browser can ignore stupid
javascript without disabling useful javascript, and security shouldn't
be a problem either. And unlike 4 years ago, there are sites that make
very good use of javascript. The classic example is maps.google.com.
Without using javascript to get the content, it would be a lot slower
and use a lot more bandwidth. But there are a lot more examples of good
javascript use. (I'm using a browser-based CMS that couldn't possibly
work without javascript, for example.)

Then GalCiv shouldn't be a problem. You can play the game without ever
using Stardock or looking at any website. But if you want updates,
Stardock will make your life a lot easier. I hope the updates will
also be availlable through the website so Stardock-haters can get them.
