New System Ideas?

I am planning my first PC purchase (am a Mac graphic design user with
limited PC experience) and I definitely want to have good 3D gaming
capabilities. What I need to know is this: since financial constraints
limit my cost to <$1700, I want to know the best trade-offs to make on
hardware.

>From what I've heard, I should spring for a voodoo2 card, a good speaker
system, a 17" monitor, a 56k modem and a DVDII drive. But if I do this,
then I would have to "settle" for a PII 300 and 32 MB SDRAM, at least
with the pricing I've seen.

Does the PII 400 and more ram make that much of a difference? Does this
sound reasonable?

Thanks :)

Lisa
