Pro Audio Spectrum 16: bad DMA problem?

The talk about the PAS-16 soundcards and others has reminded me of a
problem I faced around Christmas. I went soundcard shopping and bought
a PAS-16. I spent a day and a half trying to get it to work before
getting fed up. I tried every possible DMA/IRQ combination and had the
problem that the computer crashed when I tried to run some of the
associated software, or no sound came out at all.
   I took my computer to the store where I bought the card and they tried
to get it to work for me. The tech there said that the PAS people gave
out fixes for the various different type of motherboards that are out
there. The tech spent a day on the problem without success and said
that my computer would not work with the PAS because of problems with the
DMA on the motherboard (the likes of which he said he had never seen before;
apparently it is ...unusual). He said something to the effect of some
pulse rise-time or refresh time was not fast enough or clean enough with
my DMA that the PAS would work with it. I'm not completely versant in
the hardware side of things so I'm not sure if I remember what he said
faithfully. Has anyone heard of problems like this?
   I ended up getting a Soundblaster basic and I have been 100% satisfied
with its performance.
