LSL5 start-up problems
#960

After repeated attempts to get through to Sierra with
no luck, I thought I'd try you folks.

I installed the game, no problem. When I try to bring
it up, I get an error message: unable to initialize
sound and music hardware. Then it hangs and I have to
do a hard reset. I look at the manual again and
it says if one is having trouble starting up the game,
then one should select PC sound from the startup disk
menu. One (me) ran the start-up disk again and selected
PC sound. Yuck...beeps and bleeps and burps...it works
and doesn't hang, but....yuck.

Anyone have any suggestions on what I can do? I have
a 486/33, 250 mb hard drive, 20 mb RAM (with plenty to
spare) and a SoundBlaster set at A220 I5* D1 T3 .

* Another HP'er (thanks Larry!) suggested I try changing
my SB interrupt from 7 to 5, which I did. Now it's just
telling me it can't load my music hardware. We're making
progress, I guess.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Regards,

/andrea

I also had this same problem with my Pro Audio Studio 16. The problem is
associated with the Sound Blaster. If you log onto the Sierra BBS,
(209) 683-4463, there is a patch file named 486sbdrv.exe that fixes this
problem.

I also was able to temporarily get around this problem by selecting Ad Lib
emulation. I did lose a couple of worthless bits of speech though.

Add me to the list of people who think lsl5 is a waste of money.....why
couldn't they have made this game at least a little bit challenging?

I've had a similar problem after I upgraded my 386SX-16 to a 486DLC-33.
Finally out of desperation, I tried toggling my torbo switch to slow, and
it worked! Still that shouldn't be needed. At least I was able to get
my music and sound to play. The nightmare still isn't over...I now get asked
for a password to start the game, but I never installed one. So I still
can't play the game. Good thing I was able to play and finish it when I had
my 386 mother board installed. Any one out there have any ideas?
