I have gottne through the entire game and fixed the machine at the end, 
but I keep getting killed by the Hand when it shows up.  I've tried using
some of the few items left in my inventory after the trip up to the sky
island, but to no avail.  How do I beat It?

You can finish it by clicking the arrow at the proper positions, no need
to use any item in the inventory.

1) Click (arrow) at lower left hand corner, u will escape from the 
   hand's first attack.
2) Click at the lower position of the hand, u will escape the 2nd time.
3) Click behind the hand.
Finish.......
