7th Guest sound/hanging problem

I just installed a CD-ROM drive in my 486DX/33 (DOS 6.2) and have been
trying to run The 7th Guest, but am having problems with the sound and
the program hanging after the introduction. My configuration is
relatively simple: a 1-year old Soundblaster (not Pro) sound card,
a new Mitsumi double speed CD-ROM, Tseng ET4000 video card, and
Microsoft Mouse.

When I start 7th guest, the sound through the sound card/speakers
is initially very weak and the voices are absent, although
I can listen to it through headphones on the CD-ROM. After the castle
appears, the music sounds normal through the sound card/speakers,
but the voices are absent, and the program hangs (the hand never
appears) at the end of the introduction.

Strangely, when I run the program under Windows, I get voices, the
program doesn't hang, and all seems to work fine except for the
weak sound at the very beginning.

The documentation with 7th guest says that a hardware conflict can
cause this kind of problem, but I have checked all the IRQ, DMA,
and address numbers, and don't see any conflict. Also, the test
programs on the Soundblaster card (and CD-ROM) all work fine.

Has anyone else seen this problem, and is there a fix for it?
For now, I will run it under Windows and hope the problem doesn't
reappear later.

Thanks,
Jeff Stevens

There is a patch available through FTP that fixes some problems with
7th guest. Your problem doesn't sound like the one the patch fixes, but you
might try it anyway : it fixes problems with the sound drivers and VESA video
support. It is called something like T7G-FIX.ZIP. You might try an archie
search for T7G (Send mail message to "arc...@archie.sura.net" with no subject
line and "prog T7G" in the body, and nothing else. You will get a reply by the
end of the day with sites where it can be found and in what directory).
