Black Mirror on Vista?

Has anyone been able to make the original Black Mirror work on Vista?
I'm playing the second one now and it's really made me want to go back
and play the first one. I've heard it won't work on Vista or 7 because
of the Starforce drivers. If I install it then remove those will it
work or is there any way to get it to work? I have an old XP computer I
could play it on but I want to play it on my laptop which has Vista
(ick) on it. Thanks!

Well if it is the starforce drivers that is the problem then look to see if
there
are any nocd patches for the game.

There is a no cd patch but it makes me nervous to download it. It might
be my only choice if I want to play the game, though.

Hi Paula,

Haven't seen you here for a long time. Not many messages here for quite a
while. Sorry I can't help you as I don't have Vista installed. I was
thinking of you when I was playing Black Mirror II and III recently and
wondered if you were playing them. After I finished both of them, I replayed
the original Black Mirror. BM2 and 3 were quite good. I played the original
Black Mirror on Win 98, but this time I played all three games on Win XP SP
2. I had no problems running any of the three games on Win XP. My new
computer is about 1.5 years old. When I got it, it had Vista installed. I
liked Vista OK, but I liked Win XP better, so I went back to XP. I haven't
used Win 7.

Have you played both BM II and III ?

Mary

Hi, Mary.

I come here now and then but there is usually not much going on. I wish
it was like it used to be. Yes, I'm finally playing Black Mirror II.
I'm really enjoying it and it's bringing back memories of the first one
which I haven't played in a long time. I'm near the end and I'll get
the third one soon but I'd really like to replay the first one before I
do. I'm playing it on my husband's laptop which has Vista on it and
I've read that the Starforce copy protection doesn't work on Vista so
I'm trying to figure out if there is a way to get it to work. I don't
like Vista at all. I recently built my own computer and I put Windows 7
on it, which I like a lot. I also still have my old XP computer but I
want to use the laptop so I can be in the living room with my family
when I play the game.

Very nice to hear from you!

That's what I did, except I played both Black Mirror II and III then went
back to Black Mirror 1 which I hadn't played for a long time and when I
played it, there were a lot of places I couldn't remember in the game. I had
put the end part out of my mind, but when I played it again, I remembered
again. Bad ending. But playing the game and the story was quite good. I
can't say which one of the three games I liked best. I'd be interested to
know when you finish BM III and replay BM 1, which of the three games you
liked best.

Maybe Jenny will drop by here and see your message. She may know if there is
a problem playing Black Mirror with Vista and if its an issue with games
with Starforce not working with Vista. I don't know if Starforce was used to
copy protect Black Mirror original game. I never played Black mirror
original with Vista.

Good for you building your own computer. I haven't tried Win 7. I am quite
happy with Win XP. Many people still use it and all my programs so far have
played it, so until I am forced to move up, I will stay with what I have. If
it aint broke...

Same here. How is your daughter and son? are you still at yahoo.com at the

Yes, the first one had a very bad ending but still I really enjoyed the
game. After that ending I was surprised to see a sequel!! In BMII,
there have been several references to the first one that I just don't
remember what it's talking about which is why I want to go back and play
it again. I got it to run. I had to use a no cd patch but now it will
start and play so I'm excited.

I was very proud of myself for building my computer. I have wanted to
for years and this year for my birthday my husband and parents gave me
money to buy the components for it. It was actually pretty easy. I
felt the same about XP and didn't want to move up until it was
necessary. Especially after my husband got his laptop with Vista on it
and I disliked it so much. But when I built my new computer I decided I
should be up to date and installed Windows 7 and I'm glad I did.

My kids are both doing great. I'm really not sure how long it has been
since we have been in touch but my son is now married. He has been for
about two years now. My daughter is 13. She is slowly growing up but
she's hanging on to her childhood as long as she can, which I'm happy
about. Some kids just seem to try to grow up way too fast these days.
I do still have the yahoo address.

That's good that you got the game going. I have never used a no cd patch so
I don't know much about it. where did you get the no cd patch and how does
it work just in case I ever need it.
I know what you mean about references in BMII, and that was a reason I went
back to the original. As you say even though very bad ending, the game was
still quite good and by the time you get to the ending, you have already
enjoyed the game. A lot of times I don't remember endings of a lot of games,
especially and if the ending isn't much good, or it doesn't make sense to
me, or whatever.

Its not so easy when it doesn't work after y ou get all the components in
though :). I used to sometimes spend hours after building a system from
scratch to find the video or something else didnt work and had to eliminate
components bit by bit to find the problem. This last time I decided not to
upgrade my system and got a desktop at a good price so it didn't seem worth
upgrading my old system which would need several upgraded parts. Also, I
used to see upgrading or starting over as a challenge, but now I don't want
to bother as much as I used to. I would still upgrade if it was just one or
two parts as long as it wasn't a motherboard :(

I think I was in touch with you not long after your son got married. any
kids? Does your daughter still like to play games? I haven't played all that
many games. I played Keepsake which I liked and Whispered World was good and
Everlight which wasn't bad and sherlock Holmes Nemesis but that was a while
ago. I like most of the Sherlock Holmes games.Other than that not that many
adventure games that really appeal to me. I haven't bought Jane Jensen's
"Gray Matter". She is very talented especially with the 3 Gabriel Knight
series games. I liked all of them. I haven't decided about Gray Matter. I
would have liked another GK game better, but there won't be one.

If your a bit nervous about using it why not try it by running the game
through
a sandbox program (I use sandboxie). This will stop any changes being made
by the
game to your filesystem - sandboxie will create a virtual directory and any
file changes
will happen there instead.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have already downloaded and used it but it
was okay. I scanned it with everything I had before using it and it was
clean.

I did a lot of research and asking before buying my components to be
sure they were all compatible. I still had the fear of getting it
together and it not coming on (which actually did happen but turned out
I just didn't turn the power supply on - lol duh) My old computer had
been upgraded just about as far as it would go.

My daughter still plays some adventure games here and there but she
mostly plays the Sims now. She has lots of expansions and enjoys making
her families and making them a home. I was excited about Gray Matter
but then I played part of the demo and just didn't get interested so I
don't think I'll be playing it. I plan to finish BMII, play BMI, then
get BMIII. I also want to get Secret Files 2 after that. I liked the
first one really well. I also have a game called Alter Ego that I will
have to fit in there somewhere. I'll let you know my thoughts after
I've played all three Black Mirror games.

Yes, sometimes it can be a very small thing that is wrong and can take a
while before you figure out what it is.
But good for you that you were able to upgrade all your components. You seem
to have done well.

That's the impression I got about Gray Matter when I played part of the
demo. I didn't find the demo very interesting, but maybe the game is OK. I
don't know right now. The reviews I've read on it, seem to be mixed. I don't
think Secret Files 2 has been published in North America has it? I haven't
played Alter Ego and don't know anythng about it.

Secret Files 2 isn't available on Amazon yet but I saw it available for
download at Gamersgate for 9.99 so I thought I might get it. I don't
know much about Alter Ego, either, but I saw it on sale for $4.99 when I
got BMII and it looked interesting so I just decided to get it too and
try it.

I don't think Gamersgate games are available to people outside the U.S. I
see their games are downloadable only. do they let you copy the game onto a
CD? still for $9.99 its a good price. Alter Ego is on Amazon.com for $19.99,
but its $29.99 on amazon.Canada who have much less variety of games than
Amazon.com and usually more expensive. BM 2 and 3 are not even available on
Amazon.Canada. I bought BM 3 from amazon.com. They don't always send games
outside the U.S. but for a few months now they will send certain games to
Canada (maybe other countries too, I don't know) but not all games.

I don't know anything about Gamersgate really but saw Secret Files 2
available for a good price I thought I might try it but it seems kind of
odd that they have it available when no one else does. I downloaded
BMII from Amazon for 9.99 and since Alter Ego was on sale so low I just
grabbed it too. It was sort of on a whim. lol I was able to burn them
to a DVD so I assume if I get Secret Files 2 from Gamersgate I would be
able to, also. Also, if you download the game, you don't have to use
the cd to play the game and I like that.

It is probably good for you to download games as you used to just buy one at
a time unless you got rich as time has gone on -LOL. I don't know anything
about Gamersgate, but I took a quick look but didn't see Secret files 2 and
didn't see anything about if you had to live in the U.S. to download it.
Many times with downloaded game, anybody can download it from any country,
but maybe not always. Do you have to be a member on Gamersgate such as you
do on Bigfish to get cheap prices for downloaded games?

You girls must be desperate for adventure games. I just looked up a
review of BM3 at GameSpot because I thought about buying but it got
panned big time. 5.5/10. Sluggish pace, tedious inventory problems,
frustrating puzzles, confusing story, horrible voice acting.

My wife and I are enjoying playing Lost Horizon together!

I'll blame it on Paula. She first played Black Mirror when it first came out
years ago, and from that time, she wanted to play any or all of Black Mirror
sequels. I liked Black mirror the original too, and when BM 2 and 3 came
out, I got them and played them too. I don't care what the critics say, they
are all quite good games. Did you play any Black mirror games? Another game
I liked was Whispered World. Have you played it? its not that old. I only
got as far as playing some of the demo of Lost Horizon. Maybe I should have
gone further in the demo. Have you played Gray Matter? did you play any of
the Gabriel Knight series games? they are old games now, and I've played a
lot of games since then, but they are still in my top games.

Hi Mary,

I never played any of the BM games although they look interesting. I
will not put up with messed up puzzles or hard games. We played all
the Gabriel Knight games together and loved them big time. Especially
the second (?) one where it was more cinematic than the rest. That
must have been in the 90s. Our favorite for sure and nothing has come
close. We also liked the Syberia series but my wife lost interest
with the second one.

What is Gray Matter about? Never heard of Whispered World.

It's a shame that adventure games have fallen out of popularity for so
many years. They had a nice run a long time ago.

It's here
http://www.gamersgate.com/DD-SF2PC/secret-files-2-puritas-cordis. It
looks like you just have to register on their site to buy the games. I
read the FAQ and it doesn't look like you are able to burn the game to a
disk like I was from Amazon but it says you can download it as many
times as you want from their site. I'm not sure if I'll do it or just
wait for Amazon. It might be available on Amazon by the time I finish
all the other games I have waiting. lol

You have to look at reviews usually to find out if the puzzles or the game
is hard or not. I don't like hard games or puzzles either. There is always
walkthroughs of course which I don't hesitate to use quite often.

 We played all

Yes, GK 2, The Best Within was the cinematic one. GK1 made in 1993, GK2 and
GK3 made in 1998/1999.
I replayed GK3 a few months ago. I liked all three games. The two Syberia
games were also good. I liked both games, though I thought the first one was
better.

IMO, the BM games are all quite good. I don't usually check Gamespot for
their reviews as they seem to be down on a lot of games that other sites
seemed to think were quite good.

> What is Gray Matter about? Never heard of Whispered World.

Here's a demo of Gray matter if you are interested:

http://www.fileplanet.com/217641/210000/fileinfo/Gray-Matter-Demo

Review of Gray Matter:
http://www.adventuregamers.com/article/id,1251/

Whispered world review:
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/the-whispered-world-review

Whispered world is on Amazon for only $6.18 if you live in the U.S. I'm in
Canada and they don't sell it outside of the U.S.
I my copy from a computer friend.

> It's a shame that adventure games have fallen out of popularity for so

I agree. Some people think of GK3 as being one of the last great adventure
games. But I've played some good adventure games since then, though they
don't make nearly as many good adventure games of the same carliber as they
used to. But it would be nice if they did.

You probably already know this but you can scan it online at virustotal.com,
it checks individual files on demand using tens of different virus engines
at once.

The times that I used no CD exe files from either gamecopyworld or megagames
they were virus free and safe, but I haven't done it in a while now.
