To get to the island with the mushroom, find the condor.  He usually flies
around  the entrance to the cave.  Time it just right that you jump onto
him.  He'll fly you to the island.

Geez I played this game on a Tandy 1000 shortly after it came out.
I feel old.

Anyway sometimes in the "square" in front of the cave that has the 
boulder blocking it (or had the boulder blocking it as the case may be) 
there will be a bird flying overhead.  When you see the bird, try jumping
repeatedly underneath until you catch it.  (Actually he catches you.)
You may have to try standing in different spots to get this to work.

The bird will drop you in the area with the mushroom.  It's up to
you to figure out a way back, though.

Really? I remember first playing it when it first came out - Sierra had 
designed it for IBM so it could take advantage of and show of IBM's 
brand-new nifty wave-of-the-future machine - the PC Jr!
