As I recall, King George (forgive my lack of knowledge of English history, if I am wrong) attempted to take all guns away from the colonists in order to subdue the rebellion. The colonists of course did not go along with this and when the Constitution was written, a very intelligent opposition group insisted that a list of individual rights (the first ten amendments) be included. These amendments became known as the Bill of Rights, the intention of which was to limit the powers of the government. The guarantee of the right to keep and bear arms was included to prevent another occurance of the a government attempt to remove opposition and subdue the people governed. And if anyone knows anything about the US, they should know that our crime problems are not a result of gun ownership. It is a result of how we treat our criminals. Maybe Steve could let us know how criminals are treated in the UK. Ed Peace
