Zork (either as the original mainframe game or the trilogy form)
shares a lot of Colossal Cave's flaws. It's an essentially random (if
charming) fantasy-hodgepodge setting, with no story beyond "grab the
stuff" until the end (the Dungeon Master scene). It was the next few
games -- Enchanter, Starcross, Deadline, Infidel -- where Infocom
started to play with story and setting as primary elements of
adventure gaming.

This is not to say Zork (or CC) were bad games. They hold classic
status not just because they broke new ground, but because they were a
lot of fun.

The consensus on the text-adventure newsgroups is that Infocom's best
game was either Trinity or A Mind Forever Voyaging. (I never played
the games from other other big companies of the era -- except Scott
Adams, whose work was fun but not first-rate.)

For more recent years, you can look at the ratings at
<http://wurb.com/if/>... mind you, my name shows up a lot there, so I
would say that. :)
