< cut > > >> > "'My Country Right or Wrong' is like saying 'My Mother, Drunk or > >> > Sober'." > >> > --Chesterton > > HUH ? I don't know about you, but I'd support my mom [ God rest > her soul ] drunk or sober. > > Jim Me too, even if she's still alive ;-). I've never seen her more than the weest bit tipsy, however... But I find that this is both obvious and not very meaningful. If somebody I love makes a very bad mistake - for instance because she's drunk - I'd do everything I can to protect her from any harm, as a matter of course; but I would not say that what she did is right or that the persons she may have harmed are wrong or do not deserve some sort of compensation. And even less I'd contribute to harm them further. And the best way to protect and help a person who is drunk is (generally) to take (temporarily) away her right to decide for herself. Thus: to protect her is ok. To let her lead is wrong. Mutatis mutandis, it might be interesting to apply some of this back to the case of "my country"... Alfredo
