I had a different problem with Return to Zork version 1.1. Since I upgraded, my soundcard makes a loud hissing noise, like what you hear if there's static on the TV. It ran fine under 1.0, and I've reverted back to it because I don't know what's going on. I have a Pro Audio Spectrum 16, and am running the CDROM version. Thanks!
