  Ok, I need a blatant, out-right, down-right, clear-as-mud SPOILER
here!  

  I'm at the top of the stairs (left side, alcove is just down the
hall on my right), I wind up the bird, set it on the floor, and the
gaurds catch me, I can't run away.  So....

  I run down the hall to the alcove, while the gaurds' backs are to
me, and wind up the bird, set it onthe floor, and wait.  They CATCH
ME!  What does the painting have to do with anything, and what would I
do with a NAIL from behind the painting?
