"Alan Wake sale on Steam 90% discount starting 5/13. Game will be removed
from stores after 5/15 due to expiring music licenses."
So if you don't have this franchise yet, get it this weekend for sure.

This game is one of very few single player campaigns on my short list
to potentially be replayed through from the beginning. Loved the
overall vibe.

Agreed that if anyone hasn't played it, they should.

It definitely got a bad reputation, especially on PCs. This had more
to do with the developer's actions than the game itself, I think. The
developers stated that they weren't going to release the game only for
XBox360 because the PC's hardware just wasn't powerful enough, which
was such a blatant lie - especially for a developer that made its name
on PC games - that everyone instantly stuck them on their shit-list.
By the time Alan Wake did eventually make it to PC, its graphics and
physics were no longer cutting edge. Moreso, for all that I love the
game even I have to admit the gameplay can get a bit repetitive.

Having said that, the game presents a terrific mood and setting, and
the production values still shine through its aging graphics. The
gameplay may not be too varied, but it is solid enough and quite
enjoyable. It has some great voicework and some beautifully detailed
levels, and creeping through the woods is suitably tense. The story is
a bit nonsense but that perhaps just makes it more fun.

Alan Wake isn't what I would call a "classic" game - it wasn't as
revolutionary as Remedy's earlier "Max Payne" games - but it is good
entertainment. It is definitely a game I can easily recommend and if
you haven't grabbed it yet, well now is the time to do so before it
disappears ;-)

Only one more day and it's gone forever (supposedly). Hope it's not
just a ploy to remind us how good Poets of the Fall are. Sadly,
someone is trying to sell the soundtrack audio CD on Amazon for a
hundred bucks.

"War" was my favorite track from Alan Wake. Hearing it makes me want
to play the game.

Just a quick heads up folks, as I was looking into this whole
soundtrack mystery, I noticed that the song I posted above (and
perhaps more) is not included on the official CD audio soundtrack,
which is actually limited to the Petri Alanko compositions. If you
want the Poets of the Fall songs (note Old Guards of Asgard is just
the fictional in-game band, the real songs are by POTF), those songs
are not on that soundtrack.

HOWEVER, if you buy it the collectors edition on Steam (50 cents more)
you get the full soundtrack installed into your Alan Wake directory as
.MP3 files. From what I can tell, the only musical bonus you get with
the GOG version is the "War" music video.

So buy it from Steam if you're into the music.

I seem to remember there was something weird about the music rights to
the Max Payne 2 song "The Late Goodbye" as well. I can't figure out
of these guys are working with agents that don't know WTF they are
doing or if they are just marketing geniuses.

Going by this thread the 'best' place to buy is from humblebundle

If the Poets of the Fall songs are important to someone, I would stick
with the Steam version even beyond that thread, because the extras +
bonus material that Humble Bundle lists is different than the items
found in the Steam version. That's not to say the actual content is
the same, but judging from the listing it sounds like it only contains
the "official soundtrack", which is only the Petri Alanko tracks. Not
that there is anything wrong with Petri Alanko's tracks, they are
amazing and I have a tremendous amount of respect for his synth work,
but they are filmscore orchestral stuff and not the rock songs.

Because the whole shakeup and removal of availability of the game is
due to music rights issues, I would get the Steam version to be safe.
If the game listing soundtrack does not specifically list the POTF
songs, it probably doesn't have them.

The songs in question can be heard on Youtube for the time being, but
I'm not sure if this licensing shake-up means they will be taken down
there or not. If they are, it will mean that Steam version owners
have some great songs that simply cannot be heard anywhere else (aside
from maybe going to Finland and seeing POTF play at a venue). The
idea of having some rare tracks like that is pretty cool.
