More like DON'T MOVE! Linear, dumb and straight out of QTE inferno - I
wouldn't play this abomination if you paid me $30/hour and it was a free
download. Don't waste your time, money or bandwidth.

I didn't think it was that bad; certainly the $3 price is attractive
and if I didn't already own it I'd probably get it now. It isn't a
great game - although its CryEngine-powered graphics are nice - but it
isn't terrible. Gameplay-wise it is a less-sophisticated "God of War"
clone and reminds me of the sort of adventure-brawlers that saw a
brief popularity ten or fifteen years ago - games like "Enclave",
"Demon Stone", "Return of the King" or even "Severance". If you're in
the mood for that sort of game - and aren't expecting too much ;) -
"Ryse" isn't that bad.

Honestly, I had more fun with "Ryse" than I did with something like
"Hunted: Demon Forge" or "Blades of Time", which are of similar theme.

I don't recall it being too QTE-based - at least, not any more than
other games of its type. Worse was its lack of variety; its biggest
sin was how forgettable it was rather than its gameplay. But sometimes
you just want to whale away at some baddies with a sword, and in that
"Ryse" is an acceptable game, I think.

Sounds interesting. I thought GoW was one of the best games on the PS2,
and I like the Roman stuff.

I'm reluctant to go to some random site for one mediocre game though.

@Spalls The game had decent production values but not much else going
for it imo. Gameplay was as dull as it gets (a poor man's God of War if
you will) with gory cut scenes turned up to 11 (yawn) and the linearity
was a deal breaker to me. Gimme open world or gimme death.

@Justisaur Having said that bundlestars.com is a very reputable site if
you're inclined to get this game, I've purchased tens of games from them
and have never had an issue (now I sound like an ebay reviewer haha).

God of War had more solid gameplay; while I'll argue against the
statement that Ryse is unredeemable trash, I will acknowledge that it
lacks in variety; it is just whack-whack-whack without much strategy
or even skill required. God of War had a far more engaging story and
it required some mastery of the game's systems to complete. Ryse is
pretty though and - as I said - sometimes the wanton slaying of
enemies is exactly the sort of thing I want: the uncomplicated and
bloody slaying of hundreds of faceless goons to relieve the stress of
the day. Don't go into it expecting too much and it's fine.

I have to admit, Bundlestars' website /looks/ shady and for a long
while I avoid them because of it. But eventually I broke down and made
some purchases and since then I've been buying there for a year or two
without any issue. They are apparently work with the
publishers/developers directly and aren't a shady key-reseller... not
that you'd get that impression from the website; I'll be the first to
admit it looks like a a scammy fly-by-night operation. They do offer
some excellent deals though. The bulk of their library is pretty
crappy but it's worth it to pick up a $5 bundle of 10 games just to
get the one or two decent games therein. It certainly bulked up my
Steam library ;-)

I played the first hour of Ryse last night, it was free on Xbox One,
and yeah like you say it's pretty and just the ticket when you want
some wanton violence. It also seems very short, I got quite a high
completion percentage in the first hour's play.
