Really looking forward to this one. We're long overdue for a good Vietnam themed shooter, and to see this title coming from Tripwire is pretty much a guarantee it won't suck. If you've played Rising Storm and are into this genre of games, you already know what I'm talking about. Their games tend to not be marvels of next-gen visuals, but the gameplay is so good it doesn't matter. http://www.rs2vietnam.com/

I will probably pick it up at 23 bucks, but don't know if I want to be a part of the beta just yet.

Multi player only.
(Thinks ) There are many WWII shooters and quite a number in Vietnam,
but has there ever been one set in Korea ?
Current concerns re. North Korea don't mention that
it date's back to the Korean War 1950 -53.
which involved just about every major Country one way or another.

One of the elements that sets Tripwire's games apart is that they FEEL like proper PC games. None of this "designed for console but we'll figure out the PC port later" shit. They do a good job of capturing what made early online team games great to begin with. >(Thinks ) There are many WWII shooters and quite a number in Vietnam, >but has there ever been one set in Korea ? >Current concerns re. I've always thought the number of WWII offerings were disproportionate to everything else. There are actually very few Vietnam first person team shooters ever created. Battlefield Vietnam (2004) and the Vietnam expansion for Battlefield Bad Company 2 are about the only memorable entries, but I enjoyed the hell out of both. I enjoyed the single player of Vietcong when it was released. The multiplayer wasn't particularly memorable, partially because the lobby servers were powered by Gamespy, which was pretty common for the time, but just like with many multiplayer titles of that area, getting a reasonable online game going is not as straightfoward as it is today. About games for the Korean war, even if I look up the sparse list of games that even touch on it in some way, I can only claim having played a few of them (Chuck Yeagers Air Combat Simulator comes to mind, but I doubt anyone would call that a Korean war game, only planes of that era). Perhaps the relatively short duration of the Korean war, or perhaps a lowered perception of societal impact compared to something like WWII or Vietnam is the reason there are not a lot of movies or video games about it. In the USA when you say Korean War most people my age probably remember the TV show M.A.S.H., which lasted almost four times as many years as the war that was portrayed within it.

There weren't any shooters set in the Korean War, but there were a few games that used that conflict (police action! :) as a backdrop. In the flight-sim genre, there was "Saber Ace" and "MIG Alley", while on the strategy front you had "Conflict Korea" as an old-school war-game, whereas "Korea: Forgotten Conflict" was more tactical (sort of like the old "Commandos" games). Other games -including shooters - have used Korea as part of the setting but usually are focused on the post-war period. Flight-sims remained the most common: "Falcon 4.0" had a whole campaign set there, as did the Janes' Longbow expansion "Flashpoint Korea"; "A-10 Thunderbolt II: Silent Thunder" had some missions set there as well. On the shooter front, I recall that one of the missions in "Splinter Cell II" had you infiltrate a North Korean Base, and the attrocious "Rogue Warrior" had some missions set there too. Arguably, all of the "Homefront" games are set in Korea, since that nation annexed the USA and all its territory is considered part of the greater korean empire ;-) I think one of the major reasons that we don't see new games featuring that setting is that South Korea is a major market and they don't actually like thinking about that conflict too much (understandable, considering it is technically still in effect and the threat their Northern cousins still pose). It being a civil war also meant that the divisions weren't as clear cut as the current boundaries suggest. Also, at least for a shooter, the war wasn't too different from the ground-pounder's viewpoint than that in WW2; it was mostly the same weapons and tactics, so it would play out pretty similarly to any other WW2 game. Given this and the historic baggage, its no wonder developers have focused more on the "heroic" battles of WW2 and left the Korean conflict a mostly forgotten chapter in gaming history. Hell, the war is barely touched on by OTHER media (TV, movies) so we shouldn't be too surprised that games leave it alone too. I mean, other than MASH, can you name one movie or TV show set during that period off the top of your head? ;-)

I was having a conversation with some guys I used to play team shooters with regularly, about why there were so few games that took on the Vietnam war. One of them suggested it is because its the war that a lot of people in the US would like to forget -- a controversial war that many were not in support of in the first place, and many would now like to forget. And, it ended up being a waste of lives/time/effort/money since the country reverted to communism almost immediately after we left anyway, and it didn't exactly turn out to be a bad them for them or anyone else in the long run. I actually thought that the controversy of the war, and everything else that was going on in the USA during that time frame makes it an even more interesting war to base a game on than most. If so many movies and TV shows were created around this war, why is the same not true about games? ...this was a question that his explanation did not satisfy in my mind.
