I've been having a heck of a time with gamepads recently. I had an Xbox 360 pad I'd been using for a quite long time. I had to remove the rumblers as there's no way to control it except if the game you're playing has the controls to do so. That was actually really easy as there were only a few screws to open it and there were small white power connectors that I just disconnected. Not long ago It developed a break in the cord and kept disconnecting repeatedly. I bought a Logitech one on amazon as that was refereed as being good to use with dos-box games (xbox pad won't) and working well with the DC fighting game. I never did figure out how to get it working in dos box, but I haven't really tried. It doesn't seem any better for the fighting game either. It's awfully small and extremely uncomfortable. I've actually got somewhat small hands, so I'm not sure why people would like this one. I also found the pad/stick layout far inferior to the xbox 360 one. So I've only been using it as a 2nd pad for when playing 2 player with the son, or when my other pad breaks. I had bought this prior to my xbox pad breaking, but I couldn't stand it for long. As such after the xbox pad broke I immediately ran over to gamestop. They didn't have a real xbox 360 pad, but had one that looked similar for about the same price, and it was fairly comfortable compared to the logitech, perhaps even better than the xbox pad and the rumblers were mild so didn't have to remove them. That one lasted only a couple months before developing a bad connection - as it had a micro usb with a separate cord. Knowing gamestop only had those I went to Target. I bought one that appeared to be an xbox 360 pad, but turned out to be another off brand. That one lasted less than a month before the right stick started misregistering that it was in the down position, making it impossible to play with. I since ordered another xbox 360 pad from amazon, this time wireless. It's quite a bit heavier and a bit more uncomfortable than I remember, It seems like it isn't responding as well as the wired ones do, with some occasional lag, this could be a serious problem so I may have to just order something else. Even if it clear up somehow (not sure how I'll fix that) It looks like I'm going to have to remove the rumblers from this one as well as they are again far to strong with no way to turn off or dampen within some games I play, and it's way too heavy which that will help with. I'd hate to buy yet another xbox 360 wired pad that I'm paying for rumblers I'm just going to have to remove. I see there's the xbox one pads, but they cost a good $30 more, and there seems to be some indication they might not all work with windows 8, only 10, which I've avoided, and certainly don't want to pay for. For those of you using a gamepad, do you have one you like that's lasted awhile? - Justisaur

I just use a 360 controller for the PC, except for fighting games or MAME arcade games, then I use Qanba sticks. The wireless 360 controllers can also be used as wired if you buy the charging cable (seven bucks or so). I'd probably recommend trying that as your next step. I think the Xbox One pads let you disable vibration globally on the controller instead of per game, via the XBox Accessories app.

I use a 360 wireless pad and a no-brand clone USB wireless adapter. I find the official MS pads to be comfortable and robust. Just this week I found out that you can plug the Hori EX2 stick into a windows machine so I have that plugged in currently but haven't used it in anger yet. -- -Toby Add the word afiduluminag to the subject to circumvent my email filters.

It's a surprisingly tough design and ergonomic puzzle, isn't it? I've
owned exactly one console, the Gamecube, and grew to love it's gamepad over
many hours in RE4. On the PC side, I've only used the MS 360 pad sparingly,
mostly for adventure games, but find it awkward and clumsy. Recently I got
the Elite 360, mostly because it touted smoother action, and in particular
added paddles, which I thought could make driving games semi-playable w/o
buying a full-on wheel/pedal setup. Sure enough I have yet to try it in a
driving game :( But it's quite heavy and just as clumsy as the regular 360
pad, imho.

I was able to remove the rumblers, a bit harder this time as it use two types of security screws, the triangle one and the star, where the wired one I had before only used the star. Once I got those out it was easy to remove the rumblers as before, and easy to put back together. I noticed a mention to tape the buttons down when looking for instructions when I couldn't figure out what was going on with the screws, but I didn't have any issue with the buttons. It's a lot better without the added weight, and I've gotten used to it pretty quick, but I do notice my hands getting tired out quicker than with one of the off-brand controllers I had that broke (though the logitec was still 10x worse, so not that one) I think the lag I'm getting is actually in Dark Souls 2, not with the controller, as the whole game is freezing up on occasion now for a moment or two, and twice I've had it freeze up to the point I had to power cycle. I thought it was the controller at first as I noticed it not responding in menus, and it started happening with the new 360 wireless controller, it seems a bit coincidental. More people in the latter end of the game? Network issues? Too much for the game to keep track of at this level? Computer bogging down suddenly for some reason? Crap drivers for the wireless dongle? Don't know, have to investigate some more. Also the game won't play in full screen windowed mode anymore. It was doing that before, but now doesn't have the option for that high of resolution, so I've been playing it in fullscreen, which might be the problem too. - Justisaur

I've had this happen also with the Elite, and it's very worrying. I
can't think what game it was happening in, but it had me thinking the wired
connector was faulty? Or who knows.

I was getting a little lag when I first opened it, but it's far better after a few minutes It's like it knew I was talking trash about it and decided to fix itself. - Justisaur
