63GB Steam update for Doom?

What is going on here? I think Steam is downloading the complete
game, even though I installed it via DVD and went through the update.
I have been playing it for hours.

On another note, Steam and GOG are selling the GOTY edition of Unreal
Tournament (my all time favorite FPS) for $10! It is a 16 plus year
old game!

I just purchased System Shock 2 from GOG for $1.49!!!

What the heck is going on here?

Wow, bad patching from the company? :O That's like the whole game?

Steam has to be installing and downloading the whole game. I assume I
must start over since there will not be any checkpoints saved.

Why the heck did Steam decide to do this? With my internet connection
speed, this will take days. I assume there is no Steam support to
talk to.

Since PC and XBox One games require you to download games, even if
they were purchased on DVD, I will not be upgrading my PC and purchase
another PC game or XBox game again.

Remember that steam doesn't always d/l the full amount. Often it checks
local integrity as it goes, and skips blocks accordingly, so the total
amount could be much smaller. Let us know what it's doing!

It's not steam per se, it's the developer of the game uploading a new,
patched, version of the game instead of properly putting up a
downloadable patch that runs on the customers computer.

Defiance did this, not putting up downloadable patches and DLC, but new
versions of the game instead with them already applied.
Install from dvd, 2 days later patch reinstalls the entire game, 5 days
later buy newly released dlc which reinstalls entire game, 2 days later
new patch - reinstalls entire game. Just over a week and ~90 gigabytes
of download instead of maybe ~5 for patches and dlc content in total if
done properly.

I can only assume the developers that do this are based somewhere where
cheap, unlimited, ultra-wide broadband is available to everyone and
downloading a few dozen gigabytes is a matter of minutes.

That's assuming of course that they even tried downloading it from
outside the company's intranet.

Patching the game on their end and making sure it's stable and
functional (hah!), probably seemed like a good idea, vs a patch that
might be corrupted or only partially downloaded (by someone who would
try to apply it multiple times and then hit tech support and/or start
whining to everyone about how it doesn't work, when they haven't
actually finished downloading it.

Or try to patch when there isn't enough room, or have their system set
up in a bizarre way with non-standard paths, or various other potential
problems ...

But it is a hearty fuck-you to everyone who doesn't have uncapped
broadband, and there are still lots of places where that simply is not
available.
