Ho-ho-ho! Another day, another present. This has been a jolly full advent calendar, hasn't it? Let's open the next door, I'm eager to see what we get next! Today's game is: -------------------- Shadowrun Dragonfall Directors Cut Well, given yesterday's game it probably isn't a surprise that I am offering the sequel, but it should still be welcome. Originally an expansion pack to Shadowrun Returns, the Director's Cut fleshed out the game and made it a stand-alone product. It is basically everything that is great about the first game, except more of it. So grab your decks, sharpen your retractable razors, lock'n'load, and get out there. The shadows are waiting... Platform: Windows PC Distributor: Steam Key: 7X2KG-VXP5Q-2F6FN (In all honesty, Dragonfall is one of those 14.66% of my games I never actually got around to playing. But I /hear/ it's pretty good anyway). Ho-ho-ho!

With Bladerunner details trickling out for next year this fits the cyberpunk neon lit vibe nicely :) I'll pass it forward by sharing a key myself: Command and Conquer: Red Alert 3 - Uprising (Origin) 7CSS-V5TX-ERA8-64RV-83SM -- -Toby Add the word afiduluminag to the subject to circumvent my email filters.

Occasionally stops your gaming with a big update. 2. Origin, Updates itself poorly, installers are bulky, messy but effective. Play before download complete is a novelty, rather than functional. 3. Uplay, Requires UAC for fucking everything (lousy security design), Downloads game more like Steam. Pain in the ass with all the UAC (most of which you can say "no" to and it will still work, so why?). 4. Bethesda.net Launcher, an annoyance. Just put your modding software on Steam, dummies. Fallout Shelter is a guilty pleasure though. -- Zag Sent from my slow-ass Toshiba Laptop

That plus dialog options that change outcomes of interactions says "Role playing" to me. And of course Shadowrun is a pen and paper RPG originally, even if I never actually played it, I had heard of it. You make a character and then you build it to be what you want, as opposed to a pre-assembled character you merely steer around or the nonsense that Diablo3 did where you could change anything at any time and which rendered replay value non-existent. So far it's somewhat interesting playing it, but I absolutely hate the interface - literally EVERYTHING is a mouse click. Want to see your inventory? Click on the button in the corner, then click on the inventory button. The click on the button in the corner can also be accessed by hitting the ESC key - that so far is the only key I have seen that does anything. Interact with a character and you get 6 lines of text max at a time and have to click the [...] to continue. I can only assume that the developers are hard-core console players who can't imagine having access to a keyboard full of potential shortcuts. Seriously why can't I hit a key like spacebar to continue in conversations, loading screens, etc, or bring up inventory by hitting I or the journal with J, and so on? RA3 is supposed to be the best of the series isn't it? And Origin
offered the C&C megapack for supercheap some time back, so I'm not
complaining!

So in regards to >replayability... <<shrug>> You kinda just proved my point; one character. Not D2 style, play a sorceress focusing on meteor, or lightning, or a teleporting nova user or - each character it's own different build. Are you a whirlwind barb or a leap attack barb or another kind? A strafe using Amazon or a multishot? Each character, each build played differently, some better than others in certain areas, each with their own "charm" if you will. D3 you'd make one character of any class, because nothing was fixed and you'd swap your skills around. No decision had any consequence since it could be reversed at any time. There were no builds, there was whatever you happened to be using this second. Why would you ever make a second character of any class, when no skills are fixed? Great for the ADHD console kiddies they were trying to attract I guess, not so great for people who'd played the previous games and wanted an actual Diablo game with depth and choices and consequences and replay value. >>Seriously why can't I hit a key like spacebar to continue in >>conversations, loading screens, etc, or bring up inventory by hitting I >>or the journal with J, and so on? > >No hotkeys? That is odd. As it happens I have found 2 keys that actually do something F7 and F8 which change the screen resolution and go in and out of windowed mode. Does not actually tell you what resolution you've changed to though, so they're less useful than going to options and picking your chose resolution. I played one character because I was more interested in getting paragon points so my next character would be that much better off. And also because I knew I could get exactly the items I wanted with enough persistence and patience for my one character due to the way loot works in Diablo 3. I loved this. I eventually got my barb decked out in all ancient legendaries. I have never been so involved in one single character in any RPG I have ever played as I was in Diablo 3. I loved this. Replayability be damned. Blizzard put the focus on max level rather then leveling itself. This completely changed the dynamic of the game for me and it was a welcome change. I became attached to my one character rather then having half a dozen alts per class like every other action RPG I have ever played. I did not need to replay the same class. I had no desire to replay the same class just to see him be less useful then the last one I played and so, start from scratch again. The only consequence here is wasted time having played a gimped build and yet another level 25 character you will completely and utterly forget about. Every action RPG works this way. Every last one. RPGs are about the journey; Diablo and expansion, Diablo2 and expansion are all about the journey. D3 is World of Warcraft with Diablo names bolted on it and all about the endgame and pointless raiding type nonsense. MMO raiding is the most pointless activity known to man - raid the dungeons endlessly to get the super-duper uber special items to make raiding the dungeons slightly easier. This nonsense was all over Guild Wars as well, with people doing endless runs to collect material in order to craft the uber armor that had the exact same stats as normal armor, it just looked different - pointless. I can think of very little more mind numbingly tedious than that, which is why I don't do that. Play game to end, character "retires". Roll new character of a different class or different build and play game again. >I am not an ADHD console kiddie. I am a Gen Xer. The last console I >owned was an Atari 2600. I jumped from that system to the Commodore 64 >and from that one to the PC. The console comment was that no choices are final and everything can be undone instantly. instant gratification and no work necessary. My biggest problem with the game was that they had designed a game that had no Diablo feel at all - more like a generic ARPG with some Diablo names bolted onto it, and designed it around forcing you to hit the real money auction house with drop rates that pretty much guaranteed you would never have the gear needed to proceed unless you bought it. This after Blizzard bitching and whining for years about 3rd party item sellers twisting and ruining the game, then their next game is designed around that and done so THEY would be the ones cashing in. Even the free-to-play micro transactions games don't make it impossible to proceed without buying from their cash stores, just difficult. Blizzard made it almost impossible AND wanted full AAA title price up front AND made you play single player online with random disconnections, lag, etc in a game that never felt like Diablo at all. I played Diablo for years and I played Diablo2 off and on for a decade, usually not even uninstalling it during the fallow periods. D3 lasted a couple months at most and got promptly and permanently uninstalled. It had as far as I could see, no redeeming features whatsoever. A cash store with a generic ARPG built around it and at the last second, some Diablo flavor sprinkled on top. Maybe that changed later, but accessing those changes meant giving those greedy shits at Blizzard more money for expansions, and that wasn't going to happen. D3 was the last ever game I bought on release day (not waiting for reviews) and the last product from Blizzard I will ever buy. Up to D3 Blizzard had been a watchword for guaranteed quality gaming (at least for single player games - never played WOW,) but they sold their souls for the hope of micro transaction revenue and forever tarnished that reputation. Well in all fairness, I don't like raiding in MMOs either, but I am sure those who do like it can turn to some of the games you like, and tell you how mind numbingly tedious some of the games you enjoy are to them. Hell, I could do it Xocyll. >D3 was the last ever game I bought on release day (not waiting for >reviews) and the last product from Blizzard I will ever buy. As I said, I am aware of the game's initial state. The always online connection and real money auction house kept me away from the game. The only reason I eventually bought Diablo 3 was because a friend asked me to play with him and he told me it was half price which it was. I haven't bought a game at release since System Shock 2. Fortunately, that one worked out. >Up to D3 Blizzard had been a watchword for guaranteed quality gaming (at >least for single player games - never played WOW,) but they sold their >souls for the hope of micro transaction revenue and forever tarnished >that reputation. > >Xocyll I completely agree. They wanted the real money auction house in the game because they wanted the game to generate continuous revenue the way WOW does. This mistake most definitely tarnished their reputation. Their track record up to that point (as far as I know) was perfect.

I didn't like RA3. Loved RA1&2, C&C:TD, C&C:G, C&C3, & C&C:R. Meh to
C&C:TS, C&C4, etc.

Diablo 3 caters to >this very well. As did Diablo 2. I did not care about the journey >after the first few playthroughs of the storyline. That was kind of my point though, at launch Diablo3 did NOT cater to it, since the drops were so bad. A loot based game where the drops are such crap you are forced to farm endlessly and/or shell out real money in the auction house in order to have any chance of continuing. Consider the "secret level"; Diablo2 wirt's pegleg + book of town portal = portal to cows, easy peasy. Diablo3 need multiple ingredients each of which has a *chance* of appearing at the location. The fireplace one, not a huge problem but one of the others was jump to area, check multiple locations to see if the *cave* spawned. If it did, fight your way to the end of the cave to see if the specific *boss* spawned. If he did, kill him and see if he'd actually drop the item (and he had a very low chance of that.) Where the fuck is the fun in that? Bad enough if it was *ONE* item you had to go through this for, but it was multiple items. That's not a game, that's a treadmill. >>MMO raiding is the most pointless activity known to man - raid the >>dungeons endlessly to get the super-duper uber special items to make >>raiding the dungeons slightly easier. >>This nonsense was all over Guild Wars as well, with people doing endless >>runs to collect material in order to craft the uber armor that had the >>exact same stats as normal armor, it just looked different - pointless. >> >>I can think of very little more mind numbingly tedious than that, which >>is why I don't do that. > >Well in all fairness, I don't like raiding in MMOs either, but I am >sure those who do like it can turn to some of the games you like, and >tell you how mind numbingly tedious some of the games you enjoy are to >them. Hell, I could do it Xocyll. Actually no, because I don't play mind-numbing tedious games. When I was younger there was that drive to finish every game I started no matter how boring or uninteresting it got, but that's not been true for a couple decades now. Mostly that was because pre-internet, you found the game in a store and couldn't look up any info on it, you bought it and hoped, and having spent your cash on it you were determined to eke as much value as possible out of it, no matter how awful it was, because you couldn't return it. These days it's more, is this something interesting that has replay value? If not, no sale. And if it's not as interesting as it seemed, it's gone, I'm not going to waste my time playing rubbish. Diablo and Diablo2 had replay value, D3 did not. Borderlands had mega replay value, Borderlands2 did not and was the last game I ever bought from that developer, it was so badly done. Dungeon Siege - replayed many time, DS2, never finished - it just lacked something. Lionheart:Legacy of the Crusader: Starts great, loads of dialog and role playing but then devolves into endless hack and slash when you leave Barcelona - never finished it because it just wasn't interesting anymore. Hrm that might be worth a replay of the start of it. >>D3 was the last ever game I bought on release day (not waiting for >>reviews) and the last product from Blizzard I will ever buy. > >As I said, I am aware of the game's initial state. Fortunately, >that one worked out. Yeah SS2 is a great game. Mostly I didn't but up until D3 Blizzard had been a company you didn't need a review for, everything they made was a Diamond (even if a bit rough cut at first,) but D3 was just a piece of a shattered safety glass pretending to be a Diamond. >>Up to D3 Blizzard had been a watchword for guaranteed quality gaming (at >>least for single player games - never played WOW,) but they sold their >>souls for the hope of micro transaction revenue and forever tarnished >>that reputation. >> >>Xocyll > >I completely agree. Lost Vikings 1+2, Blackthorne, Warcraft 1+2 (never played 3 since I did not care for where 2 went with the removal of walls.) Diablo1 and 2 and D2 expansion, Starcraft. They also did the port of Battle Chess which I played back in the day. Xocyll -- I don't particularly want you to FOAD, myself. One of the reasons I did not buy the game at launch was the broken loot table. Those days are long gone. Today, Diablo 3 has the best solo and group friendly loot table of any action RPG I have ever played. Diablo 2 included. >Actually no, because I don't play mind-numbing tedious games. Actually, yes, you do. As far as I am concerned, yes you do. >Dungeon Siege - replayed many time, DS2, never finished - it just >lacked something. Exact opposite for me. I thought the first Dungeon Siege was nothing more then a boring game engine game. A game designed to showcase the engine and nothing more. The sequel was better in every way.
