As the subject header says, Elder Scrolls Online is free to play this weekend on Steam. The game is also on sale. The game received bad reviews when it first came out but it seems the game has improved a lot since launch. I am not exactly an Elder Scrolls fan but I do like MMOs so now is probably the best time for me to try it out. A warning though, the game is a good 60 gigs to download.

I might give it a try again. I bought a copy when it first came out and was a patron for a while. I found it to be a very bland 'theme-park' MMO that was vaguely similar to Guild Wars 2 and virtually nothing like an Elder Scrolls game. It was very grindy and a bit rubbish to be honest. I bought a few mounts and some cosmetic bits and pieces so I suppose I have nothing to lose by trying it out again. I have far too many games and nowhere near enough time. -- Rob

I tried it about a year ago and was underwhelmed. Of course, I came at it as a fan of the Elder Scroll series and somebody who generally does not like MMORPGs. Compared to the base games, I found the game to be visually bleak, and lacking the scale and interactivity of the franchise's main titles. The quests were par for the course for MMORPGs, which is to say repetitive and grindy. It lacked all the epic scale of the primary games, not at all helped by the fact that hundreds of other people were queueing up to do the exact same quests as I was. If you are a fan of MMORPGs I guess I'd rate Elder Scrolls Online as "average", and therefore maybe worth the download and free weekend. But if you don't care for that genre or want to try it because you liked Morrowind/Skyrim/Oblivion, then I'd give it a skip. It's not worth your time or your bandwidth.

So far, I agree. For an MMO fan like me, it is average. But I did not get very far yet at all. I am going to play it for the rest of the weekend so it has that long to change my mind about it.

I saw that when it went live, and though it might be worth a try, but it's probably a 20 gig download, so I didn't bother.
