And what version of either? My web speeds are not that great and some sports titles, especially Madden and MLB and racing titles like NASCAR are not available for the PC. $400 for either console is pricy. I would be hooking either to a an old Sharp HDTV. The resolution probably is not that special.. -pw

I must say if I hadn´t have already a PS4 (which recently broke down on me so PS4 Pro here I come) I would consider to wait at least another year when the XBONE Scorpio comes out and then decide later. The plus sides of the PS4 is really interesting exclusives Downside no UHD Blu Ray in the forseeable future and no backwards compatibility ( bought a second hand PS3 for that) Plus side of the XBONE: UHD Blu Ray Backwards compatibility Downside It has less interesting exclusives and 80% of those are now being ported to the PC. Genereally in the long run a console unless you go second hand in everything is more expensive than a PC. You end up with cheaper hardware but spend more on the games and you have to play for online play as well.

I'd say it comes down to the games you want to play and the controller you like. One advantage of the XB1 controller is that while you can use both with a PC, the XB1 controller will be recognized as an Xbox 360 controller by most games, while the PS4 controller may require remapping buttons and special software to trick the game into thinking its a Xbox 360 controller. The PS4 has more games that are only available on that platform, and not on the XB1 or the PC. A good example of a PlayStation exclusive would be MLB: The Show 16, which makes the PS4 your only option if you want to play a modern MLB game. There's no alternative available on the XB1. There aren't that many games available for the XB1 that aren't also available on the PS4 or PC. Though the XB1 does have some "exclusives" that require Windows 10 to play on the PC, like the Forza racing games. The biggest truly exclusive XB1 game is Sunset Overdrive. Many of the rest of the actual exclusives are Kinect games. Complicating matters is the fact that fact both Sony and Microsoft are coming out with newer faster versions of these consoles. Microsoft's "Project Scorpio" isn't coming until next year (note that this is not the new Xbox One S, which is a streamlined Xbox One with only a few new features), while the upgraded PlayStation 4 Pro is coming out on the 10th. You might want to check out the Black Friday sales to see if either console comes bundled with a game or two you actually want to play. Every console has after the end of its lifetime around 10-15 exklusives which never make it to the PC and which are worthwhile playing. The good thing doing this is, you can get everything for a minimum amount of money, because most people try to get rid of the old hardware to make room for the new one. If you dont buy it in an overpriced shop like Gamestop, you might end up on a bugdet this way. You will end up with the console for around 100-150 bucks with some games already thrown in and the rest of the games you want will go likely second hand with 5-10 bucks per game. I recently did that with a PS3 slim, and ended up spending around 200 bucks for a full collection and the console. (everything bought over second hand sources but nothing from Gamestop which I personally think is a ripoff)

I did the same with a Wii the year before, but have been pretty disappointed with the games on it, there's really only one game my son likes, and neither me or my wife have found any we like. I would warn though that pretty much all the good games are more expensive than they are on the PC - I've gotten some of the Lego games my son plays on Steam sales for as low as $5, but can't find most of them for less than $20 on the Xbox, some quite a bit more. That adds up quickly if you play may games. Some of the really good obscure games that aren't on the PC actually go up in price too. I remember there was a PS2 game I wanted but it was sitting around $100 last I looked. Of course you can recoup some of that reselling/trading games once done with them. It's also a heck of a lot easier/convenient to just buy the electronic version of games on steam etc. (at least if you have broadband.) and nice not to have to constantly change and store disks. With all the freebies going on easy to pick up plenty of older games, and demos seem to be making a comeback. I understand the Xbox is going more toward electronic distribution, but what games I've wanted so far have been mostly unavailable or significantly more expensive that way. A full good gaming computer will cost around $1000 without going overboard, but will have a much longer life. the cpu I've got was released 9 years ago, though I am really feeling the need to update mine, I've never had anywhere near that kind of life from a console. Of course I've updated my gpu 3 times in that period, and that alone costs nearly what a console does. Computer advances have been slowing though, and a new one will probably last even longer before updating. The other advantage of the computer is you can do quite a bit more with it than game. - Justisaur

I just found out you need an Xbox gold account to play online multiplayer in anything last night when I was trying to get in PVP on the The Crew on the Xbox at $9.99 a month (or $60 a year, possibly less hunting for deals on cards). I was pissed as you can play The Crew online on the PC for free. I decided to see how it went as the first month is free, and they give away a few older games each month and have discounts on digital games. There's nothing I'm interested in free this month, though they do have Monkey Island which is perhaps the best point & click adventure game, but I have that on the PC and played it a long long time ago, it certainly predates the Xbox by a long time. So if you plan to play online multiplayer, make sure to add the gold subscription in your calculations of cost, which in my case is really tipping it back to the PC again. - Justisaur

Good points. I only play a few MP games once in a while. I would buy the XBOX or PS mostly to play Madden and a MLB game. Probably some others that I cannot get on the PC but if I have to download them I would not do so. Both the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One also require a subscription fee to play online, but the PlayStation 3 doesn't. Also note that the "free" games you get are tied to your subscription. The latter is not correct, at least not for free games on the XBox 360. If you have an XBox Gold (paid) subscription, get a free game, and later let your subscription lapse to Silver (unpaid), you can still continue to play any of those games on your consoles harddrive without limitation. I believe there are issues if your harddrive dies or you get a replacement XBox360 (and perhaps if you delete the game from your current HDD and want to re-download/re-install) but so long as the games are on your console already, it doesn't matter if you are a paid or free subscriber. Any games you actually /paid/ for remain yours regardless of your subscription status. Of course, any multiplayer aspects of those games - paid or free - are useless if you aren't gold, but that's not of particular concern to me ;-) (I just tested on my own XBox360 and yup, all those freebie games-for-gold games I downloaded are still playable, despite the fact I stopped paying for a Gold subs two or three years ago) Microsoft may have changed things with the XBoxOne but at least with the XB360, you can keep playing those free games even if you don't pay for the Gold subscription anymore.

Oops, you're right, Games for Gold on the Xbox 360 is an exception, you do get to keep the free games when your Xbox Live Gold account lapses. With Games for Gold on the Xbox One though you do need to keep your Gold account active to play the "free" games. The same is true for Sony's Instant Game Collection for the both of the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, they require an active PlayStation Plus membership. In both cases you don't lose the games permanently, you can play them again once you starting paying the subscription fee again. At least that's what Wikipedia says, I don't have any personal experience with these programs. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Games_with_Gold_games#Xbox_One https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_Network#Instant_Game_Collection Ross Ridge -- l/ // Ross Ridge -- The Great HTMU [oo][oo] rri...@csclub.uwaterloo.ca -()-/()/ http://www.csclub.uwaterloo.ca/~rridge/ db //

So I cannot cancel my order. I guess I could refuse it. It's been about two weeks since I placed the order at Amazon and is not expected to be delivered for another week or two. I did not know about the subscription crap. Whatever happened to the MLB sancitioned game? Did that franchise get cancelled? -pw

You can probably return it to Amazon unopenned for a refund, though you'd have to pay to ship it back. You might want to contact Amazon and see what they say. >I did not know about the subscription crap. If you mean Xbox Live Gold then it's only for playing multiplayer games online. Unfortunately the PlayStation 4 is no different here, you also need to pay a monthly subscription in order to play online. >Whatever happened to the MLB sancitioned game? Did that franchise get >cancelled? There used to be three officially licenced MLB video game series: Sony's MLB: The Show, 2K Games' Major Leage Baseball 2K, and Electronic Arts's MVP Baseball. EA stopped making MLB licenced games in 2005 when 2K games negotiated an "exclusive" licence to make the games. It was only exclusive for third-party publishers though, the deal still allowed console manufacturer to publish MLB games for their own platforms. In 2013, when that deal expired, 2K games decided not to renew it, and so stopped making baseball games. That left Sony's MLB: The Show the only MLB licenced baseball game available, and as it's made by Sony it's only available for their consoles. The basic problem seems to be the baseball games simply aren't popular enough, otherwise either 2K Games or Electronic Arts would probably still be making them. If you're really desparate to play baseball on the Xbox One, the MLB league itself makes their own video game, RBI Baseball. Unfortunately it's essentially a mobile game with crude graphics and limited gameplay. It's availabe for the Xbox One as well the PlayStation 4, Steam, iOS and Android. After all starving fans will buy everything.
