His assessment pretty much matches what I remember of the first game,
and the one he is playing looks pretty much just like it. Whacka mole
from behind walls.

The popularity of that game boggled my mind, I'll never understand
what appeals to consolers.

I've got Gears of War 1, 2, & 3 for Xbox360 and I also have the
remastered version of Gears of War 1 that was released for the PC
recently.

I probably will end up getting Gears of War 4 for PC (and Xbox One
which I'm hoping I get for Christmas!) , but I'm not paying £50 for
it.

Those games are OK in small doses. Mack is spot on though, they are
very linear to the point of being on rails. They're archetypal console
games complete with 'shoot the glowing spots' on bosses and elite
enemies, regenerating health, and 'by the numbers' cover to cover
movement.

I really do find Mack extremely entertaining, even if I occasionally
disagree with one or two of his verdicts.

I don't always agree with him either, he has some interesting built-in
biases. He often lets his personal bias in certain areas creep into
reviews regularly, but then again he is much more in the business of
trying to make a review entertainment before it is informative so I
think he's pretty good at what he sets out to do and is at times
downright funny.
