Sounds like fun. I like what I'm seeing with this recent trend of
going back to what made some of the original action shooters fun.
Wish it had competitive multiplayer, but at $40 might have to give it
a shot. Will likely wait for more reviews / feedback to roll in.

If you liked the first game in 2103 (I loved it personally) you will
also like this one as well.

If you never played the 2013 game but enjoy old school shooters with
sometimes crazy amounts of enemies to deal with and generally just
lots of action most of the time, this game is for you.

I'm really enjoying the look and feel of the weapons. The environments
are really nice to look at. The graphics are excellent. The sounds are
good. Performance is excellent all round.

This is a thoroughly enjoyable game with nice crisp graphics,
entertaining action, toilet humour, and more than a nod to character
progression and weapon upgrading.

This is my kind of game.

I liked the first one a lot, but it did get a bit repetitive to me
after a while and I don't recall finishing it. I seem to recall some
level design weirdness about halfway in that left me wondering what I
needed to do to complete it.

On overall fun factor, would you say its about the same or better than
the first? The Ars reviewer seems to feel its better.

I also got stuck on the first game for quite a while, partly because I
got distracted by another game and promptly forgot how some of the
Katana special combo's worked.

I had to watch a walkthrough in the end to discover that there was a
particular lantern or artifact in a small room that had to be
destroyed so that one of those portal gates opened elsewhere on the
map. I had actually been in that room a number of times. What I had
forgotten was that a special combo with the Katana was needed to break
this thing. I was just slashing around with it breaking whatever would
break.

I think this one is better. Possibly because it looks better but it
also seems to flow better in terms of the action areas of each map.

The first game could get a bit 'Serious Sam' at times with sequences
where you just walked around before triggering enemies to spawn in
large numbers. This second game still has lots of enemies but they
seem more evenly spread out on each level.

I am really impressed with the graphics too. It's no DOOM reboot, but
it really does look very nice.

I haven't played the first one, but have bought it and intend to one
day. I'm a big fan of Serious Sam, new Doom, corny 80s action heroes,
so it sounds right up my street. The only thing I'm not sure on is the
melee katana stuff. How prevalent is it? I've never really enjoyed FPS
melee and would prefer a traditional arsenal every time.

You now have me wondering if that was the problem I encountered. I
just don't remember. This is the issue with me and SP games, I either
need to finish them within a period of a couple of weeks, or I will
likely never finish them. If I come back in a couple of months I
usually forget the special requirements like certain combos required
to advance or whatever.

I picked it up and started playing, and I agree, I think it's more fun
than the previous game.

Love the silly humor. Any game that gets a chuckle out of me is going
to be a fun ride, and this game has already done it several times.

You've got projectile weapons to choose from, right from the start. I
think the katana is fun, but the shooting is great in this game too.
Lots of different enemies in amazing looking environments; a lot of
effort went into the overall combat experience. The way I play, I do
run out of ammo sometimes and have to use the katana, but I don't mind
melee combat.

How did you feel about glory kills in Doom? My hunch is that if you
were okay with melee there you wouldn't mind it in this game.

One thing I wanted to add about this game. It is the first game I've
played that natively supported Razer Chroma (the SDK that handles
custom lighting on their keyboards). Very useful.

I'm going to discuss the Razer keyboard in a separate post with a nod
to Shadow Warrior 2.

I could do with a new FPS no nonsense shooter.
I'm interested in Shadow Warrior 1 & 2.
Never tried any of them.
Do they have Quick save / Save Any where. ?

I very very reluctant to play a Checkpoint only shooter.
Is Shadow Warrior 2 much the same as 1st one .
I can get that 1st one for v. low price.
Glad to see Toby & Rin's posts

They are checkpoint shooters, unfortunately. I guess I've just
accepted that this is how life is when PC games and console games
share the same genetics.

Flip side of that is that these checkpoint save games aren't as
difficult as old school PC games with quick saves (another side effect
of consolitis that offsets the issue). They typically are
rediculously easy on low difficulty settings, with difficulty
selectable at any time, and the checkpoints close enough together that
you're not likely to find yourself needing to repetitively go back and
perform the same tedious tasks over and over just to get over a hump.

I think you've convinced me ;)
Looking at Ebay I see that Shadow Warrior 2013 can't in fact be
brought for v. little as I had imagined - £12 plus.
So I should best go for SW 2 2016..
The very 1st from 1997 looks Duke Nukem type fun.
Wonder why I've missed them?

I think Shadow Warrior 2 is a better game than the 2013 one. I'd say
best to get the new one first, then if you love that go back and play
the older one.

I hope you enjoy Shadow Warrior 2 as much as I am.

It's definitely an upgrade on the first game which was far from being
a bad game. The introduction of loot and some RPG elements has really
taken the Shadow Warrior franchise to the next level.

This is a quote from the Rock Paper Shotgun review which entirely sums
up the game and its unabashed fun factor for me.

"It’s DOOM without the claustrophobia. A Serious Sam + Borderlands
cocktail with weighty, thumping, exciting, speedy combat. Diablo in
first-person, with wide open spaces, packs of enemies, giant bosses
and more weapons than you can shake a wang at. Shadow Warrior 2 is
anarchic, excessive, ridiculous, occasionally spectacular and almost
entirely wonderful."

Buy it from GOG. DRM free. The Shadow Warrior 2 developers detest DRM
anyway.... see:-

http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2016/10/shadow-warrior-2-developers-say-drm-is-a-waste-of-time/

Also see the comments on the article.

The full installer from GOG allows a player to cleanly
delete/reinstall a game and dump all 'achievements' if so desired. I
have not yet discovered how to cleanly restart a SP game dumping all
achievements in Steam.

Great game. Exceptionally efficient game engine. nVidia worked closely
with Flying Wild Hog on SW2.

It is a DRM-less game regardless where you buy it, that's the point of
that article.

I hope this isn't an attempt to start creating confusion about whether
or not Steam is DRM again.

"at least one more major PC developer is now on record as leaving the
whole game of cat-and-mouse with DRM behind"

Flying Hog understands that Steam is not the same thing as DRM. Kyle
Orland understands it too. Everyone should.

As long as Steam disallows full installation of a game if the Steam
client is not running, then Steam is an unwanted appendage
deliberately tying the game to a Steam user account. If Steam
generates a client backup image that I can transport and install
anywhere on any compatible machine independent of the Steam umbilical
...just like the GOG installer... then a game purchased from Steam is
only then TRULY DRM-free. Remember that Steam-DRM potentially has TWO
components 1. Imposing DRM-encryption on the game executable and 2.
Locking the purchased game to a specific Steam user-account. Element
#1 may not be present at times, element #2 is always present.

Also, you did not answer my query on restarting a Steam-purchased SP
game as a New Game with all Achievements wiped. No problem with the
GOG install. Just uninstall the game via Control Panel deleting all
save data and re-install from the the GOG download image.

You are still woefull confused about the differences between Steam
itself and the choice of whether to use DRM by the developer.

It may come as a real shocker, but I wasn't put on this earth to do
your research for you. If you have a question you are only a search
engine away.

What a game chooses to store in the cloud (achievements, progress etc)
is at the discretion of the developer of that game and has nothing to
do with Valve.

Now, get out there and for the love of fucking god, learn to use a web
browser John. It's 2016. You've spent the better part of a decade on
your anti-Steam GOG cheerleading campaign and it's gotten you nowhere
at all. There's so much you're missing in life.

I'm now playing 1st Shadow Warrior 2013.
It does have a full Quick & full save/load feature.

Its fun .
Looks remind me of 10 year back graphics with bit extra glisten.

Really? Interesting. I don't see them as options in the keybindings,
and trying the usual function keys seemed to have no effect so I
assumed it didn't have it.

What is the default key for quick save?

Yes definitely there on the main Menu 'Save' 'Load' options.
& the usual F5 Quick Save - F9 Load last Game ..listed in options- key
mapping.
I have version 1.1.2 the last I think - there were a number of patches.

This is the 2013 1st Shadows Warrior . latest SW2 release might not have
this.

Oops, I missed that you were talking about the 2013 game. New one
doesn't have it.

SW2 doesn't really need quick-saves. The in-level checkpoints are very
liberally scattered and while in the "hub areas"exiting the game at
any time preserves current state unless in the middle of certain
battles..... However, it would still be nice to have a few user
save-points optionally available in the hub areas.

Masking any real answers with clouds of irrelevancy reminds me of a
certain US presidential candidate that resembles a pumpkin.

Which one? You've got a dude with orange roadkill on his head on one
side, and some screechy doughy-faced broad on the other.

Are you saying the election can end in anything but tragedy?
