[Q] New 3D Graphics Cards

I've read a lot of posts about the new 3D cards coming out soon from
Diamond (Nvidia) and Creative (3D Blaster). But I haven't seen an answer
to a question I have, so:

Q: Are these 3D accelerators designed to replace your existing video card
like current graphics accelerators do? Or are they separate add-on
cards designed to handle 3D acceleration only (plus sound FX, in
   Diamond's case)?

I just bought a new PC that came with a Diamond 64-bit PCI card. I
essentilly want to know if I'll need to replace this in the near future.
And if that's the case, will the new board be as fast as the old one on
regular 2D (i.e. Windows) acceleration?

(BTW - I read that Creative's board will be VL-bus only at first, but I
expect to see a PCI version before long, so the question is still valid.)

Thanks for any help.

I read that the Diamond edge offers at least comparable performance to
current windows accelerators for 2D graphics, so I would presume that the
Edge also replaces ones existing video card. This would suck for those
who just bought a new system with all the trimmings (ie sound + speedy
graphics card). But for us with less than stellar systems and bank
accounts, yippee.
