If you haven't tried BARYON yet, get it. It's mental!! Smooth graphics, selectable speed from quite fast to unbelieveable, mega power-ups, etc. ftp.cdrom.com/.2/games/dos/arcade/baryon.zip It's a blast :))

Ok, now the sequel to my Tyrian/Raptor post, Tyrian vs. Baryon.
Just kidding, but I do have some comments.
The demo of Tyrian is better than the demo of Baryon. I can only
compare based on the first demo of Baryon, but Tyrian just seems to
be funner. Parallax scrolling, GREAT weapons, interesting two player
idea. Baryon has ok sound, and good graphics. Game play wise, it IS
very fun. Death by one measly hit makes it much more frantic and
competitive. But it just doesn't match up to Tyrian. Both are
great games though.
My list would be:
1. Tyrian
2. Baryon
3. Xenon 2
4. Raptor
5. Major Stryker
Mind you, I still like Raptor a lot, but it pails in comparison to
the new games (except Xenon 2, a classic). Wouldn't it be cool
if they redid Xenon 2 with better sound/graphics and a two player
mode?

I would prefer to have shields to protect me from damage (ie as in Raptor and Tyrian). The graphics are great but the game just throws too much at me. Jef

I agree it looks and plays great though. Anyone know how many levels the registered version has? -Richard (email: kvvp@maristb.marist.ed)

Yes, I remember those now too. Kaeon was a GREAT game. I remembering
hanging around the computer in anticipation as my 2400 baud downloaded
that 300K game. The sound was pretty good too, nice music. (Btw, I
heard the same music on a copyrighted fighting game once...it was
weird...). The only problem was the game was pretty hard, and there
was a small playing space. There was a good option to make the ship
invincible though, and I saw the whole game through. If I remember, there
was like 3-5 levels or parallel scrolling too. You're right Bill, a
revolutionary game for that time.
Tubular Worlds was fun, I didn't like the small sprites though. It was
a blast to play, I do have to admit.
Revised list.
1. Tyrian <-- King so far, nice graphics/sprites. Good sound. TWO PLAYER IS GREAT!
2. Baryon <-- Good Game, Raiden Like
3. Xenon 2 <-- Awesome shoot-up, even though there was no 2 player
4. Kaeon <-- Revolutionary for its time, plus great graphics!
5. Tubular Worlds <-- Two Player mode rules over Raptor.
6. Raptor <-- Good shoot-em up, no co-op mode.
7. Major Stryker <-- Good for EGA, parallax scrolling
