17 inch monitor recommendations?

I have a Nanao 340i-w 15 inch monitor for nearly 2 years. It's served me
pretty well, but I'd like to sell it and save up my pennies for a 17
inch monitor. Can anybody give me a recommendation for a really good 17
inch monitor? I heard Nokia and NEC are good brands. Is this true? Can
you also give me a model number?

And is there any national computer outlet that has quality monitors on
display that I can go and "tire kick" myself? I'd really like to see one
in action before I spend $700 - $900 on one.

Any info apperciated. Thanks!

Business Use: Samsung SyncMaster 17GLi, est street price $699

Your best bet is sticking with Nanao, the best of 17" monitors!!
The FS-EX 17" is a great one.

I have a 17" Sony Multiscan 17sf with their Trinitron tube. Excellent
monitor with a .25 pitch.

It'll run you about $900.

Idek/Iiyama Visionmaster 17" - Mmmmmmmm. I'm going to get one in the
next few weeks. They're so nice you just want to lick them :-)

It's even nicer than the dodgy 21" I have in front of me now.

Bye,

Computer Shopper (can't remember month) rated the Mag MXP17F as one of
the top choices and it's lower-cost sibling, the DX17F is identical
except it can't display above 1280x1024. The DX17F is $600 or so and
it kicks ass...

I must disagree...I recently purchased an NEC XV17. The colors were
beautiful, but it had a slightly darker band running down the left
hand side of the screen, it had extreme moire problems, and the top
and bottom left corners were bent up and down, respectively. I tried
for four days to correct these problems to no avail. I exchanged it
for another one. The second NEC was misconverged over the entire
screen and had a dark blotch on the right hand side. Back it went. I
finally decided to pay the extra $$ and got a Nokia 447X. It's just
about perfect...

When I bought my system 18 months ago, I had my head up in the
clouds with a NEC 17 inch professional series monitor. It
seemed to be the one to beat as it own year in and year out in
the Mag's best of categories.

However, I bought one of the earlier P90's and wanted to put my
cash into the faster new 3.3v processor and a better video
card. It seemed at the time one could not have their cake and
eat it to, at least not on my $4,000.00 USD budget. Anyway I
settled for the CTX1765GM against my judgement, as the previous
CTX 14" monitor I owned was crap! I thought I would settle
with this 17"CTX for a short while then when I got more cash
together I would replace it.

Boy was I wrong, this CTX was hundreds of dollars less, had
more screen real-estate, had all the modern front planel
corrections, and was Energy Star and MPRII compliant. And the
picture quality for a monitor in this price category was
incredible. Matched with my Diamond Stealth64PCI Vram and
considering it cycle rates, this combination has left nothing
wanting. I don't think I would need to upgrade even if someone
dumped $2,000 bucks in my pocket.

CTX17 65GM is definetly a winner, and since I bought it, all
kinds of awards have been earned.

I just bought a Visionmaster 17" ($740+tx) a few weeks ago and I love
it! I think it looks better than the Nanao F2-17's I've seen here at
work and it costs much less.

Also, if your doing any CAD work this monitor has bandwidth to spare
for those high resolutions (e.g. it'll do 1280x1024 @ 80 Hz).

Ignoring cost for a moment, I think the Sony GDM20 monitors that come
with the current SGI and SUN workstations are the best monitors I've
ever looked at (of course at more than $2000 a pop I ain't rushing out
to buy one). Nothing beats a good trinitron monitor!

If I had money to burn I'd still probably go with an iiyama (albeit a
21").

A guy here at work just got a new NEC 17"XP and my iiyama kicks its
ass! (of course, I haven't seen many other XP's so it could be a
fluke...).

NEC's at least to me are to "shiny". If you have any windows in your
computer room, you'll get pretty severe reflections.

I really like my Sony SE17. It's a little more expensive than what you
want to spend but for me it is worth it.
The Sony SF17 is good as well, but it doesn't have the high scan rates
that the SE does (this may not matter to you). The thing that I like
about the Sony's is the .25 dot pitch which makes for a more
clean, crisp image.

Another monitor to check out is the Mag 17". .26 dot pitch and all of the
little goodies of the NEC AND a lower price than the Sony, NEC or Nokia.

Hope this helps,
Chris

A 17" ADI Microscan monitor came with my new Zeos system. I measured
the diagonal of the screen and it is 15-3/8". I called Zeos and
complained and was told that the picture tube was 17" and if I had any
more questions I could call ADI. I feel like I was taken for a little
bit of a ride. My advice to you is to take a measuring tape. More
reputable manufacturers (IBM and Sun, IMHO) won't use this false
advertising.

The television industry recently changed its regulations on picture tube size,
The computer moniter industry should think about following suit.

It used to be that a 28" TV only had a 26" veiwing area, now that same TV is
considered a 26".

Just my two cents worth.

Apple makes really nice 17" screens. They use the Trinitron tube, and have
digital controls.

They even have headphone and microphone jacks. The 17AV versions (new)
have built in speakers.

The monitors work on both IBMs and Apples.

I have a question. My friend has a Sony FS15" monitor. Obviously it is a Trinitron tube.
His system is a P75 using ATI Mach 64 PCI video card, 2mb RAM. The monitor looks sharp
but there is something really annoying about it. Every time the screen switches, it floats.
At first, I didn't think too much of this. But after playing with his system a bit longer,
this floating problem starts to make me dizzy. Does anyone know why this is the case?

Well then there is something wrong with the monitor, or he has a
magnet field in the area of the Sony.
I have a NEC 4fg, which is very good, and a Sony, the sony
has a brighter screen than the NEC, but the sony's screen is
as sharp as a knife.
