Sounds like you're talking about Windows95 there. 800 DOS programs out of
a test group of 2500 that Microsoft itself picked had problems running in
Win95.

And does so in a manner that is begging for a system crash and invites
viruses. Also, when it runs Win16 apps it turns into a glorified version of
Windows 3.x.

Sure we can.
OS/2 - DOS & OS/2 & Windows
Win 95 - DOS & Windows

Solid numbers? OS/2 apps have topped 1 million recently.

OK, I will do the math. Last conservative figures place OS/2 installs at
over 6 million, most of those one or another flavor of WARP. By the end of
this year at the latest OS/2 will be installed on more computers than there
are Macintoshes.
Conservative figures place OS/2 apps at over a million with more and more
on the way.
As for your informal poll, it fails in one prospect. OS/2 software is not
on the shelves not because it isn't there, or because it doesn't sell, but
because most OS/2 users order direct from the company or through a
distributor.
To show how your arguement fails, it is like claiming about a year and a
half ago that Doom wasn't the hottest game around because Id didn't have any
software on the shelves at the stores.

"640k is should be enough for anybody" -- Bill Gates, 1981
"OS/2 is the operating system of the 90s" -- Bill Gates, 1989
The next one in line:
"Win95 is the greatest OS to come out for the Intel microprocessor"
-- Bill Gates, 1995
Just a meager 4 years after OS/2 2.0 came out and could do everything Win95
does.
