In >SVGA 640x480 mode, things were a little jumpy. WHen I turned on the >"horizone" which put realistic clouds in the sky, things were so slow it >was absolutley pathetic. The box says that a DX2/66 is required for VGA >(320x200) and a Pentium for SVGA. However, unless something was wrong, a >P5-60 wasn't NEARLY enough for SVGA. > lucky for you to overclock that. Mine can't do it. Unstable in few hours. Well, most people don't really consider PENTIUM 60 and 66 to be a powerful pentium. Even 75mhz pentium can be outdone by hi-end 486. Most of the pentium that is powerful nuff to do the job probably is 90 and above, of course there's always exceptions. Also, you are not sure what type of hardware that the demo machine has. The store most likely won't put up a top of the line p60 out there to demo forever. I can't tell, and you can't tell only the store person knows. In the case of Magic Carpet SVGA, most of the p100 with nuff ram won't enough for it either. Sometimes codes, sometimes just something else. But p60 probably not nuff. >In 320x200 mode, the graphics suck miserably and the detail is so low >that you can't see what's coming on the horizon until it's too late. It >reminded me of my 8-bit Atari games - blocky looking. Has anyone tried >this game in SVGA on a DX2/66 or 80? Is it worth buying? > I played the demo in this mode, but the graphics aspect is not like what you have described. It's pretty okay for a VGA graphics. I didn't get a chance to try out the demo in svga version because the new one only allow svga on pentium chip. The old one I have problem setting up. There's a directory list for it now and I will have to try again to see what the performance is. If you think that the VGA mode suck and see that it doesn't work too well with a p60, and you really wants good graphics... then no... it's not worth it. >All of this has me in a quandry. I have played the game on the 3DO and >the resolution looks fantastic on the TV set, pehaps because of the >blurriness which makes things look smoother. Regardless of the reason, >it looks worlds better on the 3DO's resolution than 320x200 on the PC. >640X480 isn't playable as far as I can tell. WHY DOES IT TAKE A $4000 >P5-133 to play this game as well as a $299 video game? it's all in the programming, and the 3d hardware. Video console has better graphical processor than PC, but not any longer... threads on 3d board can show you that. > >The P5-60 store demo was running Win95 which I have yet to buy. Someone >please tell me that the game is faster on DOS 6.22!!!! Perhaps there >will be hope!!! > there's another thingy... you not sure how much ram that machine has either... and win95 needs decent amount of ram to run decently. >I think I'll just buy a cheap Playstation to play games on instead of >spending ten times that amount to play a *ucking game on a fast PC which >will serve me no better in any other regard. When I recall some of the >neat games on the 1.79Mhz 8-bit Atari computer (like BallBlazer by >Lucasfilm), I wonder where all those bits of data path and all those >66Mhz machine cycles are going when the gameplay gets all sucky and >jumpy. Are they writing these new games in BASIC or what? > well, if you don't want to wait... go buy a psx. But if you wait, it will outshine. One day PC will be where SGI was today. (Of course, SGI will be beyond.) and that day comes fast. SGI can do way more than anything else...(exception as well.) follow the thread on console's and 3d boards and you will get a better inside in this and gain a different view. >James >
