Oh for crying out loud! What do you think happened? The German Army set out 2 weeks before Christmas but turned back because the snow was too deep, or something? The Germans pushed deep into the western Soviet Union and even deep into the Russian heartland, pursuing a "scorched earth" policy as they went. After the war, many mass civilian graves were dug up by the Allies all through Byelorussia, the Ukraine, the Baltic States and Russia itself. Because of the insane Nazi ideology, harmless Russian Jews were singled out for "special attention" by the death squads. In their two major summer campaigns into the USSR, the Germans did not plan on getting bogged down in the Russian winter. Obviously the winter compounded their problems but it was a poorly equipped Red Army which fought for every foot of Soviet soil that stopped the Germans from claiming Moscow and Leningrad (Stalingrad, too).
