More than just a battle, Stalingrad was subject to a prolonged seige. There was bitter fighting house to house, street by street. Many of the local population who were trapped there starved to death but, ultimately, Stalingrad did *not* fall. Instead, Red Army re-inforcements finally arrived and cut off and surrounded the besieging German Army, taking many thousands of prisoners (many of whom did not survive the prison camps). The Wehmacht never recovered from the shock of the literally hundreds of thousands of deaths, casualties and captured prisoners of war. If there was any one campaign that truly marked the turning point of the war in Europe, it was t he eventual Soviet victory at the Siege of Stalingrad.
