Spalls Hurgenson <spallsh...@gmail.com> looked up from reading the entrails of the porn spammer to utter "The Augury is good, the signs say: >Ho-ho-ho! > >Well, I know I'm making at least ONE person happy this Christmas ;-) >Also, you might start to notice a pattern with the next couple of >games; see if you can figure out what it is ;-) > >Today's game is: > >Tomb Raider Anniversary >------------------------------- >The original Tomb Raider was a seminal game, but by 2007, it was also >one that was getting increasingly difficult to play. This was not only >because of technological issues - the original PC version was DOS-only >- but also because both its graphics, controls and game-play visibly >aged it. So Anniversary was a very welcome remake of the original. >Maintaining enough similarity to the first whilst smoothing away some >of the rough spots, it was - and still is - a very good looking game. >It was a worthy return to what made the series so memorable. Really, bolting in a gimmick they came up with fro TR:Legend that requires you to hurl yourself off ledges and then grapple a convenient hook was good in your book? Who would do that in real life? Why would all these ancient ruins have nice shiny hooks where once they had normal paths? That was the good thing about the original, Lara's moves and the paths you had to take are what someone would actually do in real life, they actually made sense. Something that got more and more divorced from reality as the franchise continued. Each game got worse. Biggest gripe of the later TR games (and others) stupid level design; not, once they walked through here but the tunnel has collapsed, so you have to find an alternative route as the original game did, but contrived, convoluted paths requiring gimmicks to traverse that are the ONLY path that ever existed. Right, the worshipers etc traveled through here swinging via grapples across the ceiling instead of you know, walking across the floor like normal people, and they did this carrying a fucking sarcophagus that weighs a ton. They took an amazing game and fucked it over completely with the grappler mechanic, the revamped T-Rex and one-time-only Adrenaline Jump gimmick and the addition of numerous Quick Time Events. If they'd just released the original game, in modern resolutions with modern graphics, that would have been amazing, but like Hollywood "remakes" they just had to fuck it up. Pretty much guaranteed to be a shipwreck since it was a different company developing the "remake" and that's usually the kiss of death. >Except for that damn T-Rex. I /hated/ that T-Rex. I liked the original, the revamped gimmicky "make him hurt himself as he "cleverly" telegraphs his attacks so you can jump away" is just nonsense designed for Millennials who wouldn't know good game design if it bitch slapped them in front of their friends. Xocyll -- I don't particularly want you to FOAD, myself. You'll be more of a cautionary example if you'll FO And Get Chronically, Incurably, Painfully, Progressively, Expensively, Debilitatingly Ill.
