My feeling on this is that you can now easily get 4+ years out of a
CPU/Motherboard combo if you make the right choice. My opinion is to
spend the extra now, you won't regret it.

Just like you, every time I went with a non-Intel processor there
ended up being a reason I regretted it. Buy smart now and its likely
that alll you end up shopping for is a video card upgrade for a long
time.
