That Microsoft recently killed some of the copy protection schemes of the early 2000s just was the final nail for DVD distribution for me. Add to that that I do a lots of gamestreaming into the living room, which is also only possible with digitally distributed games. At least on the PC DVD gaming has died for me years ago. On consoles it is slightly different there you still can buy used games or have a high resale value on disks. Also the online games are way more expensive on consoles than on the PC. The downside of the entire development is, that you need a good internet line (I have a 100Mbit flat rate) so if you are on a bad internet line DVDs still might be the way to go. Btw. one thing I noticed is that the PC never made the jump to Blu Ray but games tend to have 50Gig and more nowdays so a DVD distribution often ends up with a steam key in the box only or a DVD which just triggers Steam. I never understood why they simply dont drop in Blu Rays into the box, after all there is literally no gaming PC nowadays without a Blu Ray drive.
