"Webmasters" typically don't make font color choice decisions,
designers do (regardless of the "significance" of the company itself.
heh).  

Ultimately it's up to QA to test it on a gazillion different hardware
combinations and decide if it's optimal, passes muster or whatever.

Gabe of course reserves the right to override all decisions, but since
he has a degenerative vision disease and extremely poor vision, what's
good enough for him should be good enough for anyone.  ;)

I get what you're saying (I think) about the use of varying shades of
grey on a background of slightly darker color, but IMO they do this so
that certain information can be "highlighted" by making the font a
lighter shade of grey (or bolded white).

Also not really sure why the website matters - very little reason to
go there if you use the client (maybe that's what you're referring
too, since the font contrast difference is similar).
