I have to say I was quite surprised that I came to like FO3 quite a lot even though the grim environment has little appeal for me. I like optimistic scifi better and yet, there I was, putting loads of hours into FO3 and its DLCs and New Vegas too. I guess it's the general wackiness of the world, grimness balanced by the crazy stuff that makes it a Fallout game. I find Borderlands uses somewhat the same recipe, it balances the violence and darkness with wacky humor.
