One of the things I really liked about FO1 & 2, was the fairly instantaneous map travel, only popping you into an encounter if one came up. I remember BG1 un-fondly for just this issue. I know there's some real time games that do this, but they seem to be few and far between. I think there was some game I played not to long ago that didn't do this, I fired up cheat engine just to speed up the game through that junk. > * Alan Wake (replay) > One of the frequently-made complaints about Alan Wake was about how so > much of the game was spent wandering through dark forests. Hmm. I like wandering around dark forests at night, it's been quite a while though, haven't been camping in the forest in probably 10 years. That might be just the thing. > * Deus Ex (with Revision Mod) (replay) I keep meaning to play Deus Ex, There was some other well thought of game from around that time that I tried late that I just couldn't get into, so going back to these is always questionable. On the other hand I've discovered some real gems doing that too. Will definitely avoid that mod if I do, thanks for the review. > What have you been playing... IN OCTOBER 2015? * Dark Souls * Fallout Shelter * Neverwinter MMO * Hard Truck apocalypse * Dark Souls - Prepare to Die Edition (PC, recent replay) Nothing else grabbed me after the last time I quit last month so I went back trying out different builds, and eventually got to the soul level 1 challenge, duped my way through farming (remember that bit about hating the waiting... add repetitive grinding) Every boss but the last in the original game down. Oddly Gaping Dragon gave me the most trouble, mainly because he could single hit me, so I had to skip him until really late in the game. I got stuck on Artorias in the DLC, and stopped playing, not really quit, just other things grabbing my attention. * Fallout Shelter (Android, recent replay) With the tip to shut the program off and relaunch if I've been playing it for an hour it is playable now. Sometimes I still get some slowness off and on. I passed 100 people some time ago, so nothing new to build. I think I'm around 138 now, and mostly trying to collect weapons and armor now. It's amazing how addicting it is, as there's always something to do. I need at least a half hour to get everything at a minimal place I can leave it though, so it's a bit intensive for a casual phone game. I keep getting hints about what to do with mr. handy, but I haven't got one yet, which is somewhat annoying. * Neverwinter MMO (PC online, new) Some friends are playing it and really into it, so I tried it. But these MMO games all just seem the same to me anymore. So I quit getting my character somewhere around level 10 I think, maybe 4 to 6 hours in. * Hard Truck Apocalypse (PC, new) Indy game I picked up on Steam for a couple bucks. That's probably all it's worth. It's a post-apoc cargo hauling/raider battle game that reminds me strongly of Elite, only with trucks. You can upgrade your truck and truck weapons, and buy different trucks eventually, there's a very limited choice of paint jobs, something like 3 per truck. The voice acting is appalling, and everyone is wearing masks (no need to have their lips move) the graphics are sparse and seem unfinished - but somehow fits for a post apoc world. If you've got to have good graphics this isn't the game for you. It's also full of just driving through this uninteresting landscape at what seems a snail's pace (maybe another game to fire up the speed hack for). I know it sounds horrible, and even though it's got the grindy and uninteresting travel I've just been railing against, but I'm laughing at the voice acting, and there's some charm to it all. I haven't played it that much, as Fallout Shelter is sucking most of my attention, but once in awhile I want to play something else, and this seems to be it at the moment. I'm not sure how long it will last me as the grindy and driving will probably get to me eventually. There's tons of stuff to watch tv & movies I've got queued up too, so there's that sucking my time too. - Justisaur
