I've had a PC in my living room for years. It doesn't get as much use
as my "primary" PC, just because the main PC is more powerful and its
screen is as large as my living room TV already, but the living-room
PC is great to have when guests come over.

The whole "keyboard/mouse on the couch" issue always seemed overblown
to me too. I have a wireless keyboard and mouse stashed beneath the
couch and they work fine: keyboard on the lap and I use the couch as
the surface for the mouse. I did go the extra mile and pulled a USB
cord under the carpet between TV and couch. Plugged into a USB hub,
it lets me used wired gamepads and joysticks should I desire. I rarely
do though.

The only major problem is that few PC games support split-screen
gaming, but this is more a fault of the developers than any
architectural difficulties on the platform (and increasingly,
split-screen is becoming less common on consoles too now that online
gaming has become the norm). So if I have friends over and we want to
play against each other, it usually requires them to play on another
computer.

Steam has supported streaming for over a year now and I sometimes use
it to stream games from my more powerful PC to the living room
computer; it works great, although there is noticible input lag (far
less than with streaming from the internet but still annoying when
playing games that require pinpoint accuracy). But it's a nice option
to have. But the fact I need to have the other PC running (and it
can't be used for anything else while it streams) is sort of annoying.

But I still prefer playing on my main PC; it's the one with all the
horsepower and peripherals, and it's easier for me to alt-tab to check
my mail or get a hint from a website when I get stuck (reading
anything on the couch, six feet away from the screen, is always a
pain).
