Like some of the posters here I also have a problem with 'retro' graphics for the sake of it when what the developer really means is we can't afford the expense of producing modern graphics so we'll dig out that Speccy 48k and take our inspiration from there. It's a fair point about money (I dread to think how much of the budget of a typical AAA title goes on graphics) but I do feel there are certain companies that know how not spend a fortune but still make the game look up to date. The game that made me think about this was Prison Architecture where they could have gone down the route of say a more modern looking Theme Hospital but instead have chosen a highly stylised but somehow modern look. It's was only when I noticed who made it (Introversion) that I realised they are the same company that also made Darwinia and Defcon. Two games also with very 'basic' but interesting graphics. Defcon must be that perfect combination of took a couple of days for the graphics but they work perfectly for the game. So where does my rambling lead me - well, it's really to say that a small graphics budget doesn't mean rubbish graphics and I really wish that other developers would realise this.
