Deus Ex is definitely one of those games it took effort to appreciate. It was never a good looking game; even when it was new it was behind the curve graphically and the fact that the gameplay all took place at night didn't help. The character models were awful (that was a common problem with Unreal-engine games of the time for some reason). The plot was extremely slow-paced and even when the action heated up, it was in no way as intense as anything found in other FPS games; this wasn't helped by its cumbersome interface. The fact that your character started out as an unskilled novice who couldn't hold his weapon steady didn't endear him to players either. The setting was often self-important, full of references to esoteric conspiracy theories and if you weren't "in the now" it was often a dismal slog. And yet... and yet... by the time you got to the end you realized that you had just had an amazing experience. The world was well detailed, the story was beautifully complex, the characters - for all they were dry and too wordy - were a cut above the archetypes found in most FPS games, and the game did its best to give you multiple avenues of attack. It might not be a particuarly FUN game but - especially for its time - it was very IMPRESSIVE. Sadly, the starting levels are some of the least impressive. Liberty Island plays out like a slow FPS shooter, and there's just not enough direction in the Manhattan levels. New players are bored with the first part, confused by the next and most give up just before it starts getting interesting. Personally, I didn't really start having fun with the game until Area 51, and that's like 90% into the game...
