Don't Activision and FASA have the right to maintain >exclusivity of their intellectual property if they choose to? They and >their staffs did spend a lot of time, energy, money, and creative juice on >this game. They've already announced their intention to market add-ons >that include new campaigns, new mechs and weapons, and a mission builder. >Why does it suck that they get to do this instead of you? > I didn't mean anything negative by what I wrote. I had started looking at their files the same day the game was released, before I heard anything about up-and-coming add-on's. Other than that, I just thought that I would be fun to design my own Mechs and campaigns like you can with the FASA RPG. I've been a professional programmer for 15 years and I strongly believe in intellectual property rights. I also think it is cool when a company like id software allows users to extend their products without landing them in a lawsuit. It sure has not hurt the sales of Doom I, ][ or Ultimate Doom. Rather, I think that all of the furor developed by users being able to design their own levels and share them with friends, has been partially responsible for the levels of sales that they have seen. I am not recommending that anyone rip-off any of the companies involved or profit off of their hard work at the expense of the originators. I just find it regretable that the wording of the Copyright and License does not make room for Public Domain, not-for-sale, add-ons and extensions. Then again, at 30 years of age, maybe I should just give up and stop caring about playing games and having fun with a computer.
